I've had my tank set up for about 2-3 months now and it is all going pretty well. This was my first saltwater tank, and I mainly started it because of all the interesting stuff I found while fishing on the coast. It is a 30 gallon hex, with rock up the back side with anenomes, and various fish from the coast. My problem is with lighting. The light I am using is an 18 inch, 15 watt aquari-lux from Wal-Mart in a basic kitchen fixture, so I know I'll probably need a different fixture. It is ok for general light, and gives things in the top half of the tank a good color. The problem is that it doesn't really light the whole tank very well. I see pictures of peoples fish they catch at the coast, under their high quality lights, and my fish of the same kind look nothing like them. What can I do to try and fix this. Please explain things too, because I don't know anything about lighting for the tanks. Oh, and another thing, please don't bother with expensive set-ups, because I'm doing this on a pretty small budget.

IMO, here's how it works...
1. figure out what you what to keep(Fish Only, Softies, LPS, SPS,etc.) This will determine the lighting you need.
2. Don't be cheap with your lighting needs. Being frugal is one thing, but save up and buy the correct lighting for your needs. You will actually save money and be much more pleased with the results if you just save up and get the right lighting the first time.

Save up, shop around to get the best price, DYI what you can, but figure out what type of lighting you need first.
