So, this is what I want to do. I'm wondering if this setup is possible. Half the tank will have intense lighting to satisfy the bubbletip while allowing the Lionfish comfort as well in the dimmer area.

1 Yellow Stripe Maroon Clown (large)
1 Bubbletip Anemone
1 Volitan Lionfish
1 Yellow Tang (Has been in tank 18 months; willing to let go if necessary)
1 Other compatible fish to replace the Yellow Tang if necessary
10 1" Turbo Snails (Will the lion eat these?)

Tank: 75 Gallon (40 lbs live sand and 40 lbs live rock) with 30 Gallon sump (30 lbs live sand; 40 lbs live rock; CPR backpack (need an upgrade :( ); Marine something Biowheel for circulation and mechanical filtration; macro algae; snails; shrimp)

My main objective is the Lionfish, so if you all can come up with other suggestions, I would appreciate it.

When I had a dwarf lion, i was amazed at what it could fit in it's mouth. I'm not certain how large the clown is (or gets), but I'd be careful with it. A full grown volitan could possibly make it a meal.

I don't think you'll need to get rid of the yellow tang unless it's just getting too big. It should leave the lionfish alone.

The other thing I would agree with is that you may want a more powerful skimmer. I think lionfish are pretty "messy", and they can produce a lot of waste. I'm not familar with the CPR backpack personally, but I've never heard anything great about it.

I use to have an aggressive reef with Lionfish that I kept for several years. He will definetly eat anything that will fit in his mouth and I mean anything. I have seen them fit things you would have never thought woudl fit in there. With that in mind I would be very leary of putting a clownfish in with a lion unless it is a very small lion. Just remember that if you feed the lionfish regularly they will grow very fast. have you already purchased the Lionfish? If not I would try Aquarium World on 290. I bought all my Lionfish from there because they had them eating frozen and freeze dried krill. I havent kept lionfish in over a year so I dont know if they still sell them weened over the frozen. Just be very careful when cleaning the tank. Make sure you know where he is at all times. As far as the skimming goes, I am unsure because I have always been aggressive when it comes to skimming. The thing is always on full blast.

JohnnyC: I will keep you in mind if I need to part with the Yellow Tang.

CRVZ: ...and I haven't experienced anything from the bakpak skimmer. I do lots of water changes to make up for it's lack of performance. I think the yellow/maroon clown gets to about 6" and I was hoping the bubbletip would aide in its protection.

Ostentum: Thanks for the heads up on Aquarium World for lionfish. I hope to avoid having to wean him. So, were you able to clean the tank without incident? I'm thinking about cleaning half the tank at a time and using eggcrate as a divider. We'll see if hearding him makes him aggressive, but I think it will work. I'll have my hot water ready just in case things don't work out.

Nope never got stung. I just kept him at bay with a net and would clean portions of the tank at a time. he was in 110 so it wasnt too difficult to get him to stay on one side of the tank. From what I heard, multiply a bee sting times about 15-20. I have seen pics and heard the stories. Its alot easier when they are eating frozen food and cheaper. It seems that the LFS near me are always out of ghost shrimp. For the most part the lionfish are pretty peaceful, the only time I have seen them get aggressive is when they chose one spot to hang out, that was the only time I got close to getting stung.

I had a fuzzy dwarf, zebra dwarf, Atteneta & snowflake eel.

Never had a problem with an agression from any of them...

The eel, was probably the worst when hungry... bad eye-sight made for occasional mistakes when biting for the food.
The lionfish, my biggest problem was their curiousity and having associated my hand with feeding time... so if I had to reach into the tank
to move something etc, they always came near expecting food.
On occasion, if they were resting on a rock formation or something, if I move close they would go into a defensive posture, but as long as I moved slow and ddin't catch them by suprise it was no problem.

Thank you all for your feedback. I'll post picks when I get things together. First, I'm going to create an arch with some dead live rock.
