I'm on a posting frenzy. I want some Tampa bay LR but will have to drive from College Station to Houston to pick up. My question is there anyone in the Houston area that sells this type of quality liverock. If I purchase locally it will cut out the shipping cost so the rock can be somewhat more pricey. I need between 25 and 30 lbs. Let me now, Thanks Dave

I won't be able to be any help with the live rock. I just wanted to say hi to a fellow college station reefer. If you need anything feel free to drop me a line.
Good luck with the live rock. I don't think ive ever seen Tampa bay Live rock.

To answer your question honestly...no, there isn't anybody local that sells close to the quality of TBS. If you want the diversity, go for it. That drive isn't that bad.

What you might consider doing is using Eco Rox - Fiji Dry Live Rock for the majority of the rock and then ordering some premium live rock from Premium Aquatics as they will ship fedex over night. Or if you want Florida aqua-cultured rock you could do something like Gulf Live Rock which ships USPS (there are others as well just google "gulf live rock" or "florida live rock". But I don't know the quality of it or the companies compared to Tampa Bay.

I’m really on the fence. I really want some rock with life but on the other hand I don’t want the problems that usually follow. I bought some rock from Fish R Us when I first started and it had great coralline and life galore. Just 2 rocks included a mantis, 2 crabs, large brittle star, 2 clams, and numerous pods . It was a little expensive and also included hair algae, aiptasia , and bubble algae. Mantis was innocent but had to go and one crab was banished because I believe he took a chunk out of my torch. (No problems since) To answer your question I’m leaning towards the local stores in the Houston area, so I can see the rock and try to cherry pick. Any recommendations would be sweet. Thanks, Dave

Man, the eco rock from BRS is awesome stuff. Use some of that with a few pieces of live that you cherry pick and it will be live and coralline encrusted before you know it. It is 100% pest free and it stacks unbelievably well.

DO IT!

Gorilla crabs are easy to catch, and mantis... well... i think they get a way worse rap than they deserve. They're gonna eat free food before they go hunting for more. So keep the tank fed. They'll eventually come out of hiding and you can catch them if you really want to. I flushed one out of my rock before i put it in the tank. Another came out in to the open and I scooped him up. Another ended up in my overflow one morning. I still hear popping. Could be another mantis. Could be a pistol. Meh.... whatever. Not really concerned. And over a year later I still have not needed to replenish my CUC.

IMHO, the benefits of TBS far outweigh a few inconveniences.

Local live rock (been there, done that) really should be called "mostly dead rock".

Oh, and I have had ZERO algae problems.

Bite your tongue, it's dead rock in water, LOL!
I like it that way anyway, i like nice clean pest free rocks that i can infest myself. I want to enjoy my system and not spend time chasing aiptasia, majono, Hair algae, vermitids, bubble algae, red bubble algae, mantis and any other hijacker.

coraline will grow whether we want it to or not.
to the op, i would buy dry rock for my base and order some LR from TB Aquatics or from members breaking down their system.
mostlikily come out cheaper that way.

A great plus to dead rock is you can take your time to plan your scape the way you want without the risk of killing things. which is the point of LR
having live animals already in the rocks, shortening the time to cycle and have a wonderful reef.

do i sound contradicting?

haha, ya... a lot of people do like to start with dead rock. Nothing wrong with that. There's some good advantages like you pointed out.

But if you are gonna go live... don't be a *************** about it! GO LIVE! :D

I've only gotten nuisance algae on the local stuff.

Its awesome stuff. I'm still culturing decorative macroalgae that grew from my rock that I bought 3 years ago :)
