Do any of you know which local stores can get custom glass tanks built through Universal Aquatics? What about through any other manufacturers (besides Oceanic)? They must be able to do Starphire.

Thanks,

is Universal Aquatics diff company than Universal? I got my Universal tank customed built thru Global Fish&Pet on Bellaire. my 220 gal tank size is 6ft long, 24" tall and 30" wide (front to back). It's similar to a 180gal size but wider- and I love the deeper look from front to back.. It make it a lot easier for aquascaping. I also had the 5" split braces on the top instead of one single large brace at the center or 2 euro braces on front and back size.. these split brace makes it a lot easier for maintenance and lighting.

I'd also recommend to get your overflow box customated for smaller sizes to give you more space. Kevin aka reefalot built two overflows for me.. just 8" long x 3" wide x 6" tall.. and with the 30" wide tank.. those overflow boxes look less protruding..

Not sure if it's a diff company or not, Universal Aquatics is out of Pasadena. I'll give Global a call.

I won't have overflow "boxes" exactly: each entire end of the tank will be an overflow. This will be an inwall tank visible from both sides, and the overflow parts of the tank will be covered with trim on the front and back.

Tell me more about this Universal Aquatics! It would rock to get a cheap(er) tank I could pick up locally.

I don't think they are a whole lot cheaper, but they are not bad.

Comparative to glasscages.com? They're driving a delivery to Dallas in a month, so I might just go with them....

Will glasscages do euro-bracing? I've heard their low-iron glass is not Staphire - and some say it isn't as clear as StarPhire either. Just FYI...

As for Universal, I'm still waiting to get a quote back from Keith. I talked briefly with Universal a week or so ago and asked if they would do Starphire - they will, but with a deposit first since they don't normally carry it. They'll also do euro-bracing.

Just talked with glasscages. They will do euro-bracing. They usually also include a plastic trim around the top and the bottom of the tank as well. I asked about being able to leave them off and he said he would leave the top off if I wanted but not the bottom (but that I could remove it if I wish). Not sure why they can't just leave the bottom trim off, but not a big deal for me (he mentioned it was only for appearances). The low-iron glass they use is Ultra-White, not Starphire.

All-in-all for my funky sized tank (52x22x24), with front AND back low-iron glass, and 8 bulkhead holes (no overflows - I'm building those myself) the quote I got was really good (from what I was expecting).

The deadline for getting something built for the Dallas delivery is like right now. Probably got another day to pull the trigger if anyone else is interested. I'm gonna think about it overnight and hope Keith gets back to me with a quote by then from Universal before I decide...
