Holy Moly! That really is terrible but I guess the silver lining is that it really could have been a lot worse when fire is involved. It's a lot easier to rebuild your tank than your home. So sorry, but hey, maybe now is your chance to make some changes for the better? Kinda like the million dollar man. Rebuild it, better than before. ;)

I am really sorry for your devistating loss. Perhaps the fire started after the collapse when the water hit the outlets. Your findings and conclusions will be greatly appreciated and widely viewed I am sure especially if the koralia was a part of it as many of us use them. If anything is still alive and you need a place to put them for a while, my tank has room.

Sorry to hear about your loss. The good news is your home and familly are ok. You can replace your tank.
I have 4 Koralia 4's in my tank. One of them came apart while I was out of town. My wife tried to put it back together but could not retrieve all of the parts from the bottom of the tank. I told her over the phone to leave it and I would take care of it when I got home. I should have told her to unplug it. She left the motor part of the Koralia hanging out of the tank on the side. Because the impeller was still in the tank the Koralia was not making any noise or moving. Some time between that point and when I got home the motor portion melted. I don’t know if it caught on fire or not but it was totally melted and left smoke on the outside glass and canopy.
I feel very fortunate that it did not catch the house on fire that night.
I don't blame Koralia for the problem I am just sharing my experience.

well what i think happened one of my koralias was having problem on starting like the impeller was knocking back and forth inside but then it went back to normal wouldnt of thought it would do anything wrong by the look of it the fire started the heat from the fire was hitting the bottom glass of the tank and the glass gave in water from the aquarium extinguished the fire in which saved the house from burning. Ive had the tnk running for about 2 years at first it was really heartbroken i am going to start again maybe in a couple of months and was already thinking of upgrading anyways so i guess im gonna have to start all over again plus our ins adjuster hasnt came by about the damages of the hurricane so we'll see what they got to say about this since my wall is kinda burned and alot of smoke damage

Unfortunately the ins will not pay enough to get them involved. Chances are they will pay nothing because of the deductible.
Live stock has zero coverage all you will be left with is a claim which will raise your rates.

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate and rare event.

I’m wondering if a GFCI or similar would have maybe prevented this?

You don’t hear about a fire often. Is there a way to prevent something like this from happening? I run everything on GFCI, but my American DJ Power Strips also have fuses. I wonder if either could save you when the trip or break.
