Get the Cheto (Spegetti) (sp) algae it grows fast and wont releae all the green stuff that can kill your tank.

I used grape Caulerpa algae in my refug in Chicago. I had mixed results with it. If you remove some once in a while then it seems to grow fast and you don't get any of the spawning events people talk about(turns white). Definitely keep out of main tank, spreads fast and difficult to completely remove!

One time after a vacation I came back and the person watching my tank didn't check the caulerpa and it had spawned. My corals were stressed from the toxin and I removed it and replaced with Halmedia. I quit using caulerpa after that. I've heard some species are not very toxic though.

Halmedia did fine while I had it, but only about 4 months.

One problem I have with chaeto, is I tend to get cyano mats stuck in it (my sump/refugia has a minor cyano issue) .

I've been growing it side by side with what could be caulerpa prolifera, the prolifera seems to be healthier in my system, though it's only been in a month or so so who knows

I light my sump 24/7. with a Homedepot (Commercial Electric) flourescent bulb, btw.

We use Chaeto, but I've heard Halimeda is good too, but it requires calcium to grow. That's usually not an issue if you're doing a reef tank.

Stay away from Halimeda, once you have them is hard to get rid of them. They suck alot of calcium out of your tank. Every single piece of dead leave from them can reproduce.
The grape one is nasty and grow like crazy.

Kevin, I wonder what it is that you gave me on the live rock I got from you. I can't figure out what it is. Plus I have something else I would like to ask you about, that I have no clue about. I need a better camera so I could take pics to show when I have a question.

Well if you have any more of those rocks I could show you what it came from. A black spot with 4 spikes sticking out, they grow, and I actually like the shape of it, looks really nice for a green macro.

The thing I have no clue about is orange, and I seen I have serveral, I wouldn't really worry except that it can move, but it isn't hairy and it isn't just straight like a worm. I hope one stays alive til Saturday, got one in a cup I can bring over.

Sent the rest in a PM.

Yup, stay away from grape. If it gets into the main tank, you're screwed.
