 Do yourselves a favour. If you own a Visitherm heater more than 3 years old - replace it ASAP with something that doesn't produce fire underwater. The one in my FOWLR setup exploded in my sump this weekend. Fortunately, I was there to take care of everything. If I hadn't been, God only knows what would have happened. After doing a little research, I found that these heaters are known for seal failures in systems where heavy dosing is involved. Well, now they are also known for failing in systems where no dosing was involved.

I'm glad your house didn't burn down. What happened to alert you to a problem? Is your tank and its inhabitants okay?

Yea, everyone's fine, thank God. The loud popping noises from the thing shorting out alerted me. I'm still shaking from it.

good to hear that everything is fine :D reefalot told me his heater cracked last week and killed some of his sps! it's scary to deal w/ those heaters. maybe we need to buy those titanium heaters to avoid cracks/ explode forever?

i think Premium Aquatics has those visitherm heaters on clearance sales.. maybe they knew the history of these heaters and try to get rid of them ASAP :D

I thought I read about some problems with the Via Aqua titanium heaters. I've used a Won Pro titanium heater in the past and it worked well, just don't trust the thermostat (they are known for sticking).

I just bought a new Ebo Jager heater for my tank - the temp has been dipping a little lower than I like on these cold nights. Anyone have any negative experiences with these? From what I've read, they seem to be one of the more reliable brands around.

Unfortunately, I went to check my own tank today and noticed I've got a visitherm too. DJ's experience sure makes me nervious right about now. Mike, I heard that Ebo Jager heaters are nice and dependable. But then again, that might just be a selling point - saying anything is a quality German product tends to get it off the shelves quicker. :)
