Just tested my Mg and it came out as 700ppm. Is this possible? Maybe I'm not doing the test right? There are no English instructions, just pictures. I'm using IO Reef Crystals.

What kit? Did you mix up the bucket before using it? RC has been known to have a few bad low mag batches.

Oh, the name of the kit could help. It's an Elos.

I got it in the 200g box, but it was all mixed together when I put it into the bucket.

I tested my Ca as well, and it came out at 250ppm.

That suprises me as you are using quality test kit and salt. Did you retest to rule out user error? If you would like to borrow one of my kits for a comparison (as long as I get it back ;) ) for a few days just ask. I keep multiple brands of important metrics just for these situations.

If you dont normally dose for mg then its likely to be really low. If you plan to dose for it brs recommends braking it up over the course of a few days raising it no more than 100 per day.

Can you explain how you did your test? I use Elos also and it's always been accurate for me. The test is a two part test. The first part of the test usually takes me around 33 drops. The second part of the test usually takes me around 6 drops. Then you do the math....

33 - 6 = 27

27 * 50 = 1350ppm

Also, I see you are around 290/beltway 8. I work at Bingle Rd. and 290. If you are really that low on magnesium let me know. I have a gallon made up that I don't use. I still have quite a bit of the dry mix I haven't even made yet. No need to go buy some magnesium. You can have some of mine. I use Red Sea Coral Pro salt mix and my magnesium levels are always perfect.

I had the same issue, and wasn't sure if it was the salt mix or the test. One thing I noticed is to make sure that you shake the reagents vigorously before using.

Here's the instructions:

So going by the pictures, I added 3ml. of water to the vial, added 9 drops of solution A, swirled it around for 30sec, and added the required ammount of reagente.

Now here's where I get confused. It doesn't tell me how many drops of solution C to add. Can anyone help me out from here?

Hmm.... How old is your test kit? The few I have bought have had these instructions....

For the first test (fase 1) add 3ml of tank water, then start dripping bottle A until the color changes from orange to green. This is where I usually do 33 drops to make the color change.

For the second test (fase 2) add 3ml tank water, 5 drops of bottle B, and then .15 of regent C. Shake to mix. Once this is mixed real good you start dripping bottle D shaking in between each drip until the color changes. This test is where I usually get 6 drops.

Then you subtract the first test (33) with the second test (6) and multiply that by 50.

33 - 6 = 27
27 * 50 = 1350ppm magnesium.

It looks like your picture is only the second half of the test or fase 2 in my pic. You are missing fase 1.

Looks to me like you add a drop of C, shake for 30 seconds and look for the color change...

If the color has not changed, you add another drop of C, shake for 30 seconds and look for the color change...

Edit....ah, missing step. Well then forget my idea. :D

It says it was made in April of 2010. If this means it's expired, then all of my kits are.

I'm not sure what the shelf life of the test kits are but yours is a year and seven months old. I'd probably get a new one.

you are right on the instructions. Once your tested water changes color, you multiply the amount of drops by 100 and that is your Mag reading.
