I haev about about 6 small mangroves I was given. Their about 3" in height and I have no clue on how to care for them. If I put them in my fuge and plant them in the sand bed they will be completely under about 3" of water, is this ok?

s/b fine... I have some in my fuge, started from seeds I got, you are welcome to come take a look. All they need is light, the important part is to keep the roots healthy so they can do suck up the nitrates.

you could stick them in some styrofoam with the roots submerdged and let them float for a while.

the leaves need a good mist of freshwater from time to time. I'd be interested in seeing what your Mg levels are after putting a few in your sump.

... a job for which they really aren't that great. Caulerpa is a LOT more effective in this regard.

Yeah, that or you could just wipe them w/ a damp paper towel. It's just to remove the salt that builds up on them. hope this helps.

mangroves

I have talked to many people who have really felt that the mangroves worked better than calupra because they grew slowly and did not have to be pruned.
the top of the pieces do need to be above the water line or they may not grow. At least that is what I was told when I bought some. I continue to use multiple things in my fuge to control my water parameters, but would like to eventually go to all mangroves.

I found mangroves grew best in pure FW as they grew very rapidly opposed to the ones I tried in SW. Above all Ive noticed is once they start growing DO NOT move them or disturb the roots. I rearranged the 20 I had since they were growing into eachother and every one of them died within a week.

I have 8 that I dug out of my refugium when I broke it down the tank and just have them in my bare bottom refugium now and I didn't lose any.

Basically you don't have to do anything to care for them. Just put them in and get them under some light and your good to go.

Also, if you get freshwater mangroves you don't have to acclimate them (from my experience). I aclimated all but one and just threw that one into saltwater and they all did fine.
