Need advice:

I have a 55 gallon tank with a Maroon Clownfish (3.5" or so) and a couple of damsels and a newly added bicolor angelfish. I put the bicolor angel in the tank after rearranging the rockwork about two-three weeks ago. I have noticed that the maroon clown will chase him upon sight and keeps the angel in the lower right area of the tank where he tends to stay. He comes out will eat with a wary eye on the maroon clown.

I am sure this is not good for the bicolor angel.

Any tips on how to solve this and get the maroon clown to behave?

Only 1 solution. Maroon clown will always be a problem especially in a small tank. If its not the angel it will be the next fish you add.
Maroon clowns are just mean they have room in my large tanks yet cant put my hand in without getting bit.

When I first added a flame angel to my old 90 gallon tank, I thought for sure my maroon and gold clown was going to kill it. After 3-4 days, they seemed to work out a truce and peacefully coexisted for many years. If yours haven't worked it out after 2-3 weeks, that doesn't sound very promising - you may need to rehome one. Good luck.

Just curious - does your clown have an anemone? Mine did not when I added the last angel. The clown is now in a 150 with 5 or 6 big anemones. I am getting ready to introduce a new flame angel to the tank (the other one died when I removed the shell it was hiding in, not knowing it was in there). I will be interested to see if the clown is more or less aggressive now that it has nems.

Maroon clowns are very mean. Mine would attack and bite me every time I put my hand in the tank. I added a flame angle in my 210 and my clown would chase the angle down every he saw him. Didn't have problems when adding tangs. I will say they become my territorial as they get older. With your size tank you will have issues. You could put him in an acclimation box in the tank for 2 weeks so they get used to each other.

I am going to try to rearrange rocks (FOWLR tank) and possibly isolate him or put him in a bucket / airstone for a day and see what effect that will have.

The maroon clown just chases the bicolor angel every time he sees him. Luckily the bicolor has lots of hiding places and does eat. This is the first bicolor angel I have had that actually eats.

No anenome in tank.

That might work. If you can have the two separated we they can see other it gives them a chance to get used to each other. This is how I add new tangs to my tank.

Took all the rocks out today (fish only with live rock). Caught the maroon clown and removed him. Purchased a acclimation box from PETCO and put the maroon clown in it. All rockwork was moved around.

Should I keep the maroon clown in the acclimation box a week / two weeks? What about adding a few more (I have two) blue / yellow damsels? Would this serve to distract the maroon? For how long?

Once he is released hopefully she (3.5 inches or a bit more) will leave the bicolor angel alone.

Thanks, SUP

I would keep in the box 2 weeks. Adding more fish would keep him distracted and allow him more fish to take his frustrations out on. Do you want damsels? They have a tendency to be aggressive.

I have two blue and yellow damsels in the tank and they cause no problems. It could be they keep one eye on the maroon clown however. They do add color to the tank.

Five damsels with similar colors (blue / yellow / bi-color angel) would either confuse the MC or drive him to be worse!

Two weeks seems a long time but I suppose the behavior needs to be changed (hopefully) and time away from chasing is what is needed.

That gives MC time to get used to the Angle. It is kind of like a kid and a toy, after a while they get used to it and it becomes boring to them. [emoji2]. Damsel are nice but there are a lot of other beautiful fish.. Of course they are more. I says I to the store find a fish you like then go home a do a little research to insure it fits in what you are wanting to accomplish. I have to admit I kept damsels at first and did not want to spend of 10 dollars on a fish at first. I can say I do that anymore and have spent 300.00 on a fish. If the bug bites it bites hard

$300? What kind of fish. I have had the maroon clown over a year and he is a great fish. When he first saw the bicolor angel she (larger than small ones) left him alone. After about 1-2 weeks, the MC decided he could chase. I increased food to the MC but that did not work. The Bicolor angel is now coming out and eating more in the open (MC in acclimation box).

I will have to ask the wife [emoji2]. She keeps track on what I spend. I think it was for the big angel I bought. I know my purple tang was 180.00. Glad to hear the bicolor angel is coming out and eating.

Success! Looks like isolating the maroon clownfish in the acclimation box for two weeks allowed him time to think about things. He and the bicolor angel co exist and swim out in the open water. I rearranged all rocks and allowed the bicolor angel to settle in for about two weeks while the maroon clown was in isolation. Been a couple of weeks and no problems.

Thanks!
