Hey everyone. I'm looking for any recommendations on how to catch my Niger Trigger fish. He is about 6" now. Got him when he was just a little over 1". Hes very skidish and hides when I get close to the tank. Ive even left nets in the tank and blocked all his normal exits and he still finds ways around them. Is there a trap out there that anyone recommends I can buy or even some I can make? Or does anyone have a trap I can rent from them? Thank you!

Only way is to take everything out of your tank so he can not hide...That is if you are not even close by leaving nets in the tank. They do have an upper fin that jams them into a rock so you can not pull them out. Maybe find the rock he is hiding in and quickly grab the rock and put it in a bucket of the same water that is in your tank. I have never done that but just might work?? Probably a good idea to use a thick leather glove for your own protection ?? Good Luck

I have a fish trap you could borrow, but it's a heck of a drive from you to Conroe. It is about 7.5" long at the bottom and 9 or 10" at the top. I have caught 5" fish in it, but it depends on which is stronger - the fish's food drive or its shyness. Hopefully Tangs' idea will work or you can find a trap closer to home, but mine is an option if needed.

Fish trap is your best option-try not feeding the tank for a couple of days. You want the fish to be real hungry when using a trap.

agree, when I need to catch a difficult fish, I put my trap in the tank and feed only in the trap. I have a long piece of pvc that goes down to the trap that I drop the food into. If a fish wants to eat, he will eventually have to go into the trap or starve. Sometimes, it takes a few days, but have caught every one I've tried for.

Very clever...

My smartest fish is the white tale bristletooth tang-never ever went inside the trap. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Triggers are easy to catch.

Yea, triggers are pigs. I've yet to see one that would pass on a meal.
