OK guys heres the deal.... Currently have 55 reef up and running... Just bought 150rr... Want to tranfer stock from 55 to 150 and convert 55 into refuge for 150... I want both tanks at near the same level, side by side... How do I transfer water throught the 55 refuge and back again to the 150...

Do you have a sump also? If so, you can set it up like I have mine - I divert a little bit of the flow from my return pump to the refugium (which is next to my tank), then I have the refugium drain back into the sump.

IF you don't have a sump, then the next best thing would be to elevate the refugium slightly higher than the tank, drill a bulkhead into the refugium as close as you can to the top, then use that to drain into the main tank. Use a powerhead or a small pump like a Mag3 to pump water to the refugium.

If you want the levels exactly the same (and don't have a sump), then you will have to use a Utube to return water to the main tank (you still need a small pump to get the water into the refugium). You would want to design it like a good overflow (Lifereef, etc.) where you have a box inside each tank with a small compartment that keeps the UTube submerged. Otherwise you would be guaranteed a flood when you have a power failure and lose the siphon in the UTube.

That would be tough keeping in mind that you want them at the same level. I think it would require dual pumps which would be very hard to balance.

Why do you wish to keep them at equal heights?

EXACT same height is not required but I would like them close.... I like the sump idea.... Just have to size the sump in such a manner as to acomodate the volume from both tanks in the event of a Power Interuption.... I will keep this thread posted as this thing evolves.... Does anyone live up off of 290 with a similar setup?

I live at 290 & Beltway 8 and have a similar setup. Let me know if you want to drop by and take a look sometime.

You don't have to size the sump that big - I have a 75g tank and 20g fuge with a 20g sump. Just leave enough room in the sump to accomodate the water that will drain from the pipes when the power is out, and make sure you use check valves or siphon breaks on your return lines.
