I have a standpipe to drain the water in my new tank's overflow box. Naturally, if I use just a straight pipe sticking up it is very noisy. From what I understand, if you connect an upside down "U" shaped pipe to your standpipe and have a small tube sticking out from the top of the upside down "U" it should get rid of the noise. I tried this, but when I put the "U" on, my tank could no longer drain enough water to account for the water being pumped into the tank. The "U" has a wider circumference than the standpipe, so I don't know why this is restricting water flow. What's the trick to this?

I followed this design to the letter and it works perfectly, no gurgle and keeps up with no problem.

click on "build your own standpipe", should have a diagram showing an exploded view. Very important to make sure you have the hole drilled in the top cap as well.

yes

Yes, the overflow box is around it. Without the "U" it keeps up fine but is very noisy....with the "U" the water level slowly starts to raise. I read up on the Durso site but still can't figure out why this is happening.

it has to do with the pressure that builds up. it is explained on the durso site, if i remember correctly. you cannot simply add a U without allowing for some of the air in the pipe to escape. that's why durso pipes are designed to have a small vent on the top of the pipe. that's the point ChrisB was trying to make. it requires some adjustment in the size of the hole for certain applications.

Wish i was closer boudster, I would build you a standpipe no charge, i just built mine 2 weeks ago from the web site mentioned above and it worked awesome. i have a ton of pvc material left and the whole project would not take more than 5 minutes.

problem

From looking at the durso site, the problem may be that I have a 1" bulkead and am using 1" PVC. according to Durso, I should use 1.25" PVC. Do you think that would cause the problem?

It can, it worked alot better for me with 1.25" PVC. The 1.25 is much thinner walled also, so it make a pretty big difference.

Hey Jim,

I've been there and done that. You have to use the 1 1/4" section above a 1" bulkhead or it will not work.

Yes, you need the 1 1/4", and to clarify what Shane said, you need the thin-wall PVC, not the regular schedule 40 stuff. I've only been able to find the thin stuff at Lowes, not HD.

If the water is up to hight the hole is too big. If it is making a slurping sound the hole is not big enough. ou have to put a hole in the cap or it will create a syphon and not work right.

I was going to try a durso, but my overflow box simply wasn't wide enough. I found that putting a street L at the top silenced the gurgle, and it fit. You might give that a shot.

Boudster,

The first one I built was out of 1" PVC and my water level kept fluctuating up and down in the overflow no matter what size hole I drilled in the cap. I called it the toilet flushing effect. The second one I used 1 1/4 PVC and the hole I drilled was no larger than a 1/8". I started very small and increased the hole to tune the pipe. It recommends not cementing the Durson into the overflow bulkhead so you can pull it if needed. I would offer to build one for you but I am headed out of town and won't be back until Dec 6th. Here are a few shots of mine. Note in the first picture I replaced the fitting in the bottom of the overflow box with a threaded one that would accept the threaded adapter. I'm sure there are many ways to do this but this worked for me.

boudster,

Also instead of the durso you can use the stockman. Do a search on reefcentral on stockman.

hope this helps.
