They were washed up on the shore, we don't know where they came from, but I'm guessing it maybe some sore of Anemone. There were a lot of them washed up. We picked the one up put in the shell in the water and took pictures. I'm just curious if anyone know's what it is.

Looks like a Corynactis sp. anemone. Most of that species have pretty strong stings.

I love the color on that one. I've seen them in orange, white, and pink, but had not seen dark blue/purple before.

I believe it is Porpita porpita aka "blue buttons".

It is an interesting beast similar to the portugese man o war - a colonial animal. Not a jellyfish or anemone. It sits at the ocean surface, and is not likely to survive in a tank I should think.

Another similar animal is Velella velella, the "by the wind sailor" which has an interesting "sail" on top.

These were classified with the portugese man o war Physalia as siphonophores but I see now they have been removed into the Chondrophorina.

I don't think it packs quite the same punch....but I have no first hand experience :D But I don't believe it has quite the same degree of specialization as Physalia....these are all highly fascinating colonies however, with lots of specialization of "colonists" Definitely worth researching more. I may find some links at break time!

That is so cool. There's such amazing stuff you can find on the beach if you just take the time to go look.

thanks Ophiura.
