As everyone know that our 370 sps show tank crashed last month. Thats is why I haven't had any auctions.
Paul from neptune system came into oceanlife and ask if he can install the new apex on our show tank. I said sure. He installed everything himself. He put the 1/2hp chiller on their new EB8. He check the amp draw and said everything was good to go. I usually never add a chiller to the eb8 but knowing that he knows more than me about his product. He installed it on thursday. Friday fine. Saturday fine as I thought. chiller plug was not working. I accidentally left the halides on , on sunday. monday came into the store to drop off a shipment of some nems and MY SHOW TANK WAS AT 94 degrees and milky white. EVERYTHING DIED! I calculated conservatively the cost of everything at 13K. full retail value at 30K. We had some rare acros in there. Plus 5K a month in loss revenue from no acros to frag for our auctions. I have lost a total of 40K in the last 2 months. THEY WANTED TO OFFER ME 4K IN PRODUCTS.

KEEP YOUR DARN PRODUCTS!!!

Yeow! there were no email or text message alerts set up to let you know the temperature was out of range? I don't run an apex so I don't know their capabilities. My GHL has all kinds of alarms that will email and text me if something goes crazy. That's very terrible. Sorry to hear that.

Did you lose the fish too?

He had to leave early so those setup was not done. my mistake believing in the product. I was goin to do on tuesday when I got back to work. eb8 plug arc from too much amp draw and the chiller was not working . I got into the store on monday night for a shipment of anemones. saw what happen and plug the chiller into a normal plug and worked right away. but too late.

Nick,
sorry to hear that man.

Im wondering seriously why the system did not trip the halides, even while manually put into ON within the apex.
Knowing the controls functions very well, the Apex trip settings are almost annoying while setting up a new system.
Typically you can't get outlets configured and saved without putting these trip values in for all sorts of control functions.

Im curious now what the heck went wrong.

I don't belive I would have let him walk out of the shop without setting the alarms and testing them. I can see how you would trust him though. I would think they would claim responsibility since they did not set up the alarms. Surely they have some insurance that would cover it?
That's just bad buisness on their part if they don't make it right.
Wonder what the inside of that unit looks like...

I would probably feel the same way, I saw this on Facebook. If APEX came and installed their new system on a tank like that I would want the full support. You don't just come, set it up, then roll out before its finished. Stick around for a couple days, ensure its functioning properly. Man, even use that opportunity to show off and slang the new APEX system!!!

Major reminder here for us all don't rely on technology to the point of complacency! (Not saying Nick was, just saying technology is a great function of this hobby just don't take it for granted)

Sorry for the losses Nick, just a horrible situation overall!

We were in the store earlier today, for the first time, and it was clean, fish and corals were in great shape and the staff was very friendly. Wish we could have seen the 370 and very sorry to hear that this happened.

^^why in the world wouldn't that have been one of the first things setup? Temperature control is one of the primary reasons to have a controller.

Regardless of the outcome (hopefully you get compensated), it's a tragedy to lose such a collection to human error.

Maybe it's just me but I built a separate box with a relay that switches my chiller on and off and it is plugged straight into the wall socket. The controller controls the coil on the relay but the amp draw is on the relay and not the controller. My 1hp chiller pulls something like 12 amps. There is no way a power bar can handle that load switching on and off numerous times per day/week/month without a malfunction. I can't believe apex wouldn't suggest that or make a box for that. Mine cost me less than $10 to build and it will hold 40 amps.

I am still in disbelief on how something so simple could cause so much damage.
