I'm not sure I'm going to keep the SPS any longer. I'm really enjoying Ricordia's and anemones right now. But I may still go down that road. I did have carbon running in the system for the first 50 days it was in service but pulled it once everything was stable and I was only using RO/ROSalt water.

Adding carbon won't be hard though and I'm sure it can't hurt so I'll work it back in, I was just trying to get away from as much chemical filtration as possible.

I am considering adding a clam (don’t know which variety yet) now that I have stronger lighting but I'm waiting for the tank to mature a bit longer.

New pictures are forthcoming; if I can ever get away from the office.

Thank you,

John

Just a suggestion.....get the GSP and Xena out ASAP!. They will take over your tank in no time, especially being a 12 gal.

My tank is a 34 Gallon...And alot of what I have in here will be moving to my new 90 I'm building out. This tank will become my dedicated Ric and Clam tank. :D

Well it has been awhile since I updated this thread. The tank will be turning a year old in May and it has been an experience. I still love the clean look of the RSM but the skimmer they ship with it is probably the worst skimmer I have ever seen. I'm about to try replacing it with either a tunze 9002 or a Sapphire 29. I don't know if the Sapphire will be enough for the tank but I'm going to give it a try; it can't be any worse.

Here are some updated pictures.

This shot is from last November, notice the ity bity rose on the rock to the right of the shot.

The Rose and Maroon. I’m going to try and pair this Maroon with the one in my 120 as soon as I think they are both big enough and I have the time to keep an eye on them.

Your tank is amazing! I have a rsm as well. I was wondering if you know of any nems that could be kept well under the stock T5's. I really want one, but don't want to take the plunge unless i know it will last.
Thanks

t5s should be good enough, you do not get the penetration power of the mh's but the anemones will find a location in the tank that they like......if i were you i would go with a 14k.....20k looks better in color but the 10k or 12k would speed up the growth of corals, anemones, and other organisims......good luck with the tank and it looks good....also with a 34 gal i would stick with t5 because mh produce quite a bit of heat.....

I have 150MH and 2x18w CF and my tank temperature stays consistently between 77-79 degrees.

I did install a small cooling fan in the rear and the hood has 2 internal cooling fans to exhaust the heat. The light is 1" from the surface.

Most of the heat problems on the RSM come from the huge, inefficient, useless skimmer they put in it. It is a massive beast of a skimmer that never in an entire year produced the amount of skimmate I have extracted using a Sapphire Aquatics BC29 with the ity bity RIO RJ600 pump in the past 2 months. Before removing the old skimmer pump I could never keep my temperature under 80 and was constantly sitting around 82 degrees or warmer.

It is a very nice tank aside from the skimmer.

Here is a current picture.

Thanks gadus1
And now i know why my tank temp is staying around 80. Time to invest in a new skimmer :)

Just curious but did it look like you could have modded the 150w with the existing T5's? possibly ditch two of them and mod it together?

If not do you still have the original lighting?

I pulled out the 2 T5 55w bulbs and replaced them with the DIY MH kit from NanoCustoms.

I still have the original lighting and equipment. I'm getting ready to use it to build a light fixture for my 20long fuge so I can ditch the CF lighting.

Its a display fuge that just has different macro and other fish in it.

Lots of changes. The rose out grew the nano so I moved it to large reef and it split immediately Woo Hoo! Both roses are over 5" in diameter.

I didn't have a minor accident that cost me some frogspawn and torch that I had relocated to the nano from the large reef. I forgot to check the temperature on the water I was adding to the tank

I will try and get some pictures uploaded this evening to show the new layout after the aquascaping.

I'm trying to get ready for PORT-A trip. Lots of drawing goodies to load up.

Regards,
