Well I had a new tank planning thread but the planning is complete and the build has begun. For those interested I have added links to the pictures below.

I acquired 90% of my parts and equipment, 100% of the important stuff from MARSH members and figured I'd share my progress, and tremendous thanks.

Last weekend my brother in-law and I started the tanks stand construction which has definitely been an experience. So far we have a pile of lumber as we did all of the cuts first and tomorrow we'll be assembling the frame. I will post pictures assuming I remember to take them. He is the woodworking guru so I take no credit other than the design which is completely my fault if it collapses :D

We are going with a 2x4 frame and then a hardwood shell with a laminate finish... right now we are trying to go with Mahogany but the price might be out of my budget.

Due to performing some of my acquisitions in reverse order I have 190lbs of life rock and a ton of Chaeto and various other algae in a holding system.

Holding system:
1 30 gallon AGA tank with overflow for refugium
2 x 40 gallon Tuff Stuff oval bins bulk headed and connected together for flow.
1 PM Bullet skimmer with Mag 9.5
1 additional Mag 9.5 for flow.
1 Mag 3 for flow to 30 AGA
I know that is a lot but I won’t have my sump for the new tank until next month. Marc from Melevsreef.com is working on that now. (I hope) It is going to be my dream sump. 60 gallon capacity with approx… 14 gallon refugium.

The new tank:
45x27.5x23 with a fluid capcity of 99.8Gallons (accounting for overflow area loss)
41x18x20.5 sump with a 14 Gallon Fuge and rough guess of 24.5 gallons of flow with a total sump capacity of roughly 60 Gallons
Blueline SD1100 for return
Little Giant 4-MDQ-SC for Skimmer
Iwaki WMD40RLXT for closed loop circulation with an oceans motions 4way
2 x 250 for 10 hour light cycle
1 x150 for 12 hours to allow for sunrise/sunset
Somewhere in here I’m going to probably add a chiller but I’m not sure if I’ll need it yet since all pumps will be external. If I do it won’t need to be large. The house is kept at 75 so I would probably only need a 1~3 degree pull down. (Open to suggestions)

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions…

Anybody in the New Territory/Greatwood area of Sugar Land? Looking for Reef neighbors.

Sounds like you're on your way, good luck! Even though all your pumps are external, they can still add some heat to your tank. Since you've already got quite a bit of power being used with all the hardware, I'd consider trying out some fans before dumping the cash into a chiller. Some larger clip on fans can really make an impact to the water temp, but you may be right; you may not need anything. Good luck, and don't forget the pictures!

looks like you are off to a nice start......

I would try some fans first. I have fans on one of my tanks and it is truly amazing how well they work

Well the stand is about halfway done. Here are some pictures of what I went with for the final layout.

Now I have a big dilemma. I've ordered the Oceans Motions 4 Way to build the closed loop but I can't decide if I want to drill my tank for it or just use PVC to create the loop. I know none of the glass is tempered and the front/both sides are starphire.

Any thoughts? Anybody on the SW side of town that has drilled tanks before that would like to help if I decide to do it?

Thanks,

Definitely drill the tank. PVC looks too messy.

City Pets is close to you...they do drill tanks.

I talked to Paul at T&T yesterday. I'm going to take my tank over to his store to have it drilled; as soon as I get enough muscle together to put the thing in the van.

The tank weighs about 300lbs dry.

I'm still building the stand so I told he has some time to work on all 5 holes.

I picked up my sump from Marc http://www.melevsreef.com/ and it is gorgeous. I'll post some pictures this weekend.

Are you going on the tank tour tomorrow?

T&T quoted (verbally) me $25 per hole. Given the cost of drill bits and the time it takes to drill, that is a good price IMHO.

There is no guarantee on the work though. I don't believe anybody would make that promise.

Holes for the tank

City pets is $10. per hole and if you want a bit then look on Ebay.
There is a supplier from china Who sells them for around 6-10 per bit and if your going to due multiple hole it isn't a bad deal.

Very nice tank by the way. It will be a great project.

Cheers,
Rex

Can't wait to post tomorrows progress pictures. I may actually have the stand frame complete by the end of the day. :D[/b]

It takes alot of beer to watch glue dry... I wonder how much you need for the paint and stain :D

Well after getting the 3 cabinet sections together, I have decided on a slight modification to make sure all of my pumps and such fit correctly.

Here is the new layout.

The added bonus is room for another 48" tank right next to my 45" :D

How tall is the canopy?

13 3/4" with trim... 250watt DE MH bulbs will be 9" from bulb to water surface.

The reason I asked some canopies are too tall and that looks kind of funny.
For retrofit lighting I prefer the mogul base bulb. It's much more safer than the DE bulb.

Overall, it' look great!

I went with DE's as a personal preference. I actually think they are safer and easier to maintain since they are in a housing and have UV glass shields so you’re protected from shattered bulbs. I think I forgot to mention that the bulbs are in PFO Housings. I agree I would never mount them as a ‘retro-fit’, but the housings can be mounted.

I’ve made the mistake of the super tall canopy before so I avoided that this time. 2” of the 13 ¼” actually comes down over the lip of the tank to cover the rim. I’ll post some more pictures shortly. I finished assembling and painting the cabinets, only 2 months after I started… 8O

Thanks for the input,

No worries. All input is wanted and welcome; I really never mentioned how I was configuring it. I would love to get it done perfectly the first time but I know only one entity gets it done perfectly; mother nature. :D About to post more pictures. I'm planning to get the tank drilled this week... wish me luck...

Thank you,

Well I'm a lot closer to starting the cycle process... At that rate I'm going that is at least 4-6 weeks :D

My new 61 Gallon Sump  built by Marc at http://www.melevsreef.com/ .

He did and unbelievable job and I can't wait to start using it. The right side of the sump is an 18 Gallon Refugium.

Hopefully Sunday morning I will be running the 2 20 amp circuits to where the tank will be located; asssuming the attatic isn't to hot.
