I just set up a 45breeder and have just mixed my saltwater a day or two ago and have a small powerhead in it for water movement after the salt mixed. I am waiting for my rock and expecting it any day now but when I looked into my tank this morning, it looked like there was already algae in the tank already and the tank is not even lit. Is it algae or just dust/dirt that just ended up in the tank? I did vaccum but don't think it would have kicked up that much debris.

is it on the glass or on the sand? An algae bloom in a new tank can be expected....did you add anything to make the tank cycle such as a bacteria culture, fish, table shrimp piece etc? Don't worry the algae that will form will go away as soon as the tank finishes the cycle. Expect the cycle to last 3-5 weeks or so. If you are getting live rock to add to the tank the rock will cycle the tank for you.

The tank is going to be barebottom so the algae or dust is on the bottom glass and the side panel glass. I didn't add anything just mixed the saltwater and left it with a powerhead. It also took me a few days for my RO to fill up the tank but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I have left fresh SW in a bucket before and never had algae in it.

Sometimes when I make up saltwater and leave it aerating overnight, I end up with detritus settled out in the bottom of the bucket. Sometime's it's dark, sometimes lighter. I just figured it was sand/rock etc... That got mixed in with the salt. Could this be what you're seeing?
