Well the dreaded happened again. Last wednesday my third Oceanic 72 reef-ready bowfront sprung a leak.(bottom seal). This is my third tank in 3 years. I was home when it happened so I only lost about 8 gallons.

I called Oceanic and complained and told them I refused to put another bowfront tank in my house, and asked them what they could do for me. (At first I was told that the person who makes that decision had gone home, and I could call back tomorrow) After a little bit of the run around, I got upgraded to a 90 gallon reef-ready, they exchanged the tank stand and canopy.

It took a couple of days to get everything transfered over and settled down, but all is doing well. The only thing I lost was a fairy wrasse, and my xenia doesnt look real well right now, but thats minor.

All in all it went as good as it could, and it could have been a lot worse.

Shane,

What did you do when you found the leak? Did you take everything down right then and there and put into buckets or what...just curious if you found a way to stop the leak or slow it down.

The leak wasnt fast. I would say a 1/2 every 10 minutes or so. As soon as I noticed the wet floor, I put everything into 2 rubermaid containers. (corals and fish in one, LR in the other) and saved as much water as I could.

I just kept circulation in the conatiners and everything did pretty well.

If it were me I would give up on bowfronts all together or when I got a new one I would super seal every seem with another layer or ten of silicone.

I did give up on bowfronts. I got them to change it to a 90 rectangle. No more bowfronts for me.

Were the tanks level each time? That's just insane that you've gone through 3 of them! Although the 72gal size is the one that's notorious for this happening. I hope your 90 works out better for you.

I have a oceanic 72gal non-reef ready bowfront with oceanic stand for 5 years without any problems(knock on wood) and even moved it a couple of times. Is it common to have problems with these bowfronts? Should I be concerned?

I made sure it was level each time, but it is on very plush carpeting. Oceanic said the carpeting shouldnt matter as long as it was level. I know of a couple of people whove had problems with the 72 bowfronts, but if youve had it for a while I wouldnt worry. Most mine lasted was this one at 18 months.

On the plus side, that's pretty decent customer service - even though you had to work for it a little bit.

sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with the old tank. i hope that you're happier with the 90. it sounds like they really felt bad about it and fixed you up nicely.
