I am in the process of building a new reef tank. The stand, well I like the enclosed stand, but its hard to clean up inside it and just seems tight.

I'm thinking of doing a open stand. Does anyone else do it.....why or why not?

Ya looks nifty and different. But you can not hide extention cords as well. And you do not have the storage capabilities any more. My stand could possibly survive an earth quake it is soo stable which includes someone accidently falling against it.

There is WAY too much junk and wires under mine to not be enclosed.

Maybe in the fish room...but not on my display where the wife has to look at it.

Ditto on the too many wires here. However.. We were talking about display refugium the other day.. I say do partially enclosed with a display sump!

I agree that aesthetics/covering up the "stuff" is the big thing. I recommend you hunt up RocketEngineers build thread on RC to review. The skin is also effective in helping prevent lateral torsion, side to side twisting, that could affect stability. With the weight of most large tanks that may be so minimal as to not be a true factor but I do remember seeing it as a benefit of skinning the stands. Some of the builders on here can help more.

I decided to enclose it....looks way better, plus still have full accessibility. The door "snaps" in with big powerful industrial magnetic catches. Saw it on a build on RC for a 125 gall, will work for my 40b!!
