Comparing the Reef Octopus Regal 250EXT (External) ($919.99 ) Vs. the Reef Octopus RO-5000SSS 10” (699.00)

My tank: Heavily stocked 480 display with running (2) 75 gallon sumps one mechanical one biological filtration. I would think I should the 5000SSS but their reef expert is saying the 250 ext with the float valve auto shut off if the way to go. Here are their specs:

Reef Octopus RO-5000SSS 10”
Filtration Handling
Well Stocked Tank - Rated up to 400 gallons
Medium Stocked Tank - Rated up to 450 gallons
Light Stocked Tank - Rated up to 500 gallons

Regal 250EXT
Filtration Handling
Well Stocked Tank - Rated up to 250 gallons
Medium Stocked Tank - Rated up to 375 gallons
Light Stocked Tank - Rated up to 550 gallons

Opinions on which one to get or another one I may not have considered?

Get the biggest one you can fit in your sump, just my opinion.

The 5000SSS is the largest I can fit. Only 11" clearance from top of sump to bottom of stand. The regal is bigger but would be out of the sump, in between the two sumps and handles less filtration.

That’s more than plenty in my opinion. I recently sold my 500/g tank. I do miss it.

Sorry RR-MAN, which one is more than plenty? The Regal or the 5000SSS internal?

I'm running the Reef Octopus SRO5000-EXT but it's in the sump. My tank is a 400g with some pretty big fish and I feed very heavy 2x/day. The SRO is more than I need. But part of the key to good nutrient export is the type of bacteria that you have in your system. Those who have seen my fish can attest to how fat they are and I only empty my collection cup once every week or two and my PO4 is almost zero. I attribute a lot if it to the bacteria population doing its job and reducing the load on the skimmer. My vote is for the 5000 if it will fit.

Float valve auto shut off is certainly nice (I have the Elite 220) but for your tank size, I'd go with the SRO. That Regal 250 is not up to the task.

I agree. Bacteria is super important!

Take a look at the Red Sea RSK-900 skimmer.

I gotta tell you guys...this Deltec has been the best skimmer I’ve ever owned. It’s dead silent, and consistent. Produces dark rich skimmate. My only complaint is that I prefer a better way to grab the cup. Other than that...it’s solid. Never needs adjusting. Likes a water level at 8” not much higher than that.

Here’s how it sounded. Can’t lie with video.

Nothing beats the Reef octo skimmers especially the SRO 5000. Go with the brand that is proven. [emoji106]
