Hi all,
I'm placing the final order for the lobster egg product from the Netherlands. Final pricing should be around $40-$45 per flat pack (which is an entire kilogram!), which is much more than I was initially told, but still not too high for me to get. I wish I'd stocked up on Nutramar Ova back in the day...

Check the Group Buy section for more info.

Good question. Nutramar Ova is a frozen food product (lobster/prawn eggs) that is famous for getting finicky fish to start eating prepared foods. Unfortunately, Ova has been out of stock for a couple years now. I finally got tired of waiting and called several places in the EU which market a similar product, "Ruto Lobster Eggs." Until now, the product has not been available in the U.S., but I begged a vendor in Miami to import some lobster eggs from the Netherlands. I plan on stashing away 3 flat-packs to use for finicky fish until they start eating other foods. Since it is such a pain to import this stuff, I do not plan on doing it again.

Ohh nice! Sounds like something great to have on hand. Ever tried garlic guard?

What's the self life on the eggs? Once you thaw, can you refreeze again...

It's definitely a great product to have in the freezer. I haven't tried garlic guard, but I did use some garlic back in the day.

I expect that shelf life and handling of this product would be the same as with other frozen fish foods. Double/triple bag it for long-term storage, make sure the air is out of the bag, etc. For products like this, I typically will take 1/5 of the package and cut it into small pieces and put the pieces in a little ziplock baggy to access easily. The rest of the pack goes into long-term storage (triple bagging).

I believe that bacteria can contaminate frozen foods once they're thawed, but I have re-frozen foods without negative impact. I plan to keep a nice stash of this stuff for at least 3 years, since it is a pain to ship to the States. Maybe Ova will go back into production one day, but I've been waiting for two years now and it's time to try a similar product.
