Gotta love when you forget to turn your heaters back on after a water change 2 days ago. i just noticed my take at 70 degrees and it likely got colder than that last night since i never turn the heat on in the house. nothing dead yet but they sure don't look happy. Of all the fail safes i programmed into my raspberry pi controller looks like i forgot one.

anyone else got any fail safes they actively use so while i'm doing some programming i can incorporate it?

IF HEATER OFFF > 120 THEN EMAIL! LOL
All kidding aside, you can do something similar in Apex though. Not sure if it can be done in your RPi

Not much you can do as far as certain types of fail-safes go. In this particular (and similar) scenarios an alert if a gear is off (or on) for some extended period of time is useful.

Also, during a water change, I do the opposite as you did. I turn on two heaters to make sure the water is quickly brought up to temp and they shut off at desired temp. (I don't have a heater in my SW mix tank), but this is just me.

My nitrates jumped from 25 ppm to 50 ppm in the last week or two. Come to find out, I had turned off my refugium light for some reason. Oooppppssss. Everything is fine though so I can't complain.

I replaced the back of my living room wall with 16 feet of sliding doors a few weeks ago so I spent about 3 nights without a wall on the back of my house, 10 feet away from my tank. The living room got down to 40 degrees 3 nights in a row on those cold nights. No way my heaters could keep up and my tank actually got down to 64 degrees and could only manage to climb back to about 74 during the day before doing it again the next night.

I had some unhappy corals too but surprisingly, everything survived. Here is my torch the first morning. I was nervous for a few days.

Should have started a little fire in your living room. That would have been the smart thing to do.

ok before you call cps i try ok, my tank fluctuates at around 80 to 72 daily normally around 78 to 74 my heaters don't auto turn off so i have to constantly change and one heater is old so i can't really mess with it cause i have no idea how the dial works. keep in mind i have hardly fish they are the only ones in there, but they seem kinda stressed at first but now they are used to it im not proud of it and a new heater is on my list but they are still healthy and happy, well for today tomorrow they go in a 30 gallon and that is when i have to watch every hour.

80 to 72 is a pretty big swing, and 72 is pretty cold for a lot of corals. My tank swings between 77.7 to 80 depends if i have my room door closed or not. I would try get a new heater at least one that auto turns on and off.

You definitely need a temp controller (Bayite Temp Controller) to get a much consistent temperature. I got one just in case, but have never used it since I use Apex set to 78.5 and the lowest my temp will drop at night is to 78.2 (You set the controller to turn ON at 78.2 and OFF at 78.5).

As a fail-safe, you can have anothe heater (Or second controller) set to 80.

Don’t feel bad. I was excited to pick up my first SPS frags today. Kicked on my RODI to fill my ATO reservoir this morning. Got a call from my wife while picking up the frags freaking out because the living room was flooded. Her brand new rug was soaked and she was less than pleased. Ordered the float valve while stuck in traffic.

Hardy ≠ Healthy

This sudden drop in temperature will compromise your fishes' immune systems making them more prone to parasitic infections such as ich. That sudden shift can severely affect their immune systems. It's your money though.

A few ideas:

Do you have the capability of monitoring the current in the Pi setup? Perhaps if the current isn't normal (like it's low low (pump not turning on, lights not turning on, etc) or high (pump is clogged, etc)).
If a float switch is off that shouldn't be (like I have three and they have a specific order they should go up in...).

Personally i haven't tried it, but i'm pretty sure with a few more electronics and code i can do it. I basically reverse engineered the Kasa wifi powerstrip with some help from github and they originally could monitor power output. i think somehow i can tap into that.

Lol, more hammers look like that as well. But my fish looked crazy lethargic and my leopard wrasse only came out for an hour today and refused to eat. Thats when i knew something was wrong.
