Does anyone know how to clear up particles floating in new tank ?

I started to cycle a new red sea reefer 350 on March 24th with live rock and live sand, The tank was clear and everything looked great just until 3 days ago when I noticed the whole tank had particles floating in it.

I have 60 pounds of coarse and 20 pounds of fine sand in the tank Because I grabbed the fine sand by mistake and found out later when I filled up the tank.

The water is clear but when I turn on the light you can see all the particles floating around.

The skimmer is off so it's not microblubbles.

I have 2 mp40's they are turned down to 30%, If the mp40's are off the particles will lay down.

I have been changing my filter sock everyday but the particles are still in my DT.

It could still be bubbled and i would guess it is. Wou may have a leek in the pluming that is sucking air. It could be as simple as a return line pouring water above the surface causing bubbles. Fun filter socks for a day or two and see if it clears up.

The red sea reefer 350 is a Herbie system and there are no bubbles in the return chamber, the return pump hose has clamps on the end and no microbubbles in the return chambers either.

Tank is still new. It may take awhile for all the really small sand particles to be filtered out. Are the MP40's moving your sand around on the sand bed? Keep up changing your socks and water changes. I bet it clears up soon.

Mark,

Yes the mp40's are moving the sand around but not in a big way, just a few specs here and there depending on what mode that are running at the time.

How high are you guys putting the mp40's from the top of the tank ?

That is proababaly where the particles in your water are coming from. I'll have to measure mine but I would guess they are about 8" from the top? My tank is 24" tall.

The Red Sea reefer 350 came with 200 micron mesh socks, I changed them out to 200 clothe they seem to do better.

just bought some 100 micron hopefully it will clear thing up.
Yep. I run them all the time. Swap them out when they overflow. Then throw them all in the washer

I'm thinking detritus or sand.

Bubbles will float to surface with no flow on.

Run felt socks and stir the sand bed so that the fine sand falls to the bottom.

Give it a few days, that will clear it up.
