First off I do agree with the masses as far as how petco is more interested in money and not so much about the health of the pets that they sell. With that being said I do feel that there are exceptions to that and one of which is the Petco off of 1960.

Today I went in there with the intent to buy a rigid air line for a brine shrimp hatchery (I failed because they no longer sell rigid air lines) and I came out with a pair of Cardinals that are actually holding eggs, and also a beautiful snowflake clown.

First off the cardinals were on sell because they just got a large order in and they had two that seem to be paired up with the male holding eggs. The snowflake was also on sell for $30,

I do have to say that this is the only petco that I have ever purchased fish from, their tanks seem to be VARY clean, I have seen ICH once in their tank and I was told that nothing was for sale and that the fish were going to be removed and then treated. I went back a month later and everything looked amazing. They have a vary good sales staff over there that actually seems to care about the fish and understand how to take care of them.

You can tell which petcos have employees working in the aquarium department that are actually hobbyist. My petco used to have an amazing saltwater section, well amazing for petco standards. Until the gal that ran it quit, then it went to poo...

If you are speaking about the pet o in atascocita I totally agree. They have a pretty decent salt water section. Although some of their fish are not the healthiest at times its pretty decent compaired to other petcos and you can catch some nice deals sometimes when they have sales

Yes it is the one in Atascocita

The store at 1960 and Eldridge is actually making improvements all the time recently. It had been horrible where some tanks had so much algae on the front glass you couldn't even see what was inside along with empty boxes hanging from the shelves to items in spots for other items half their price and there was never anyone working the dept. The only time we ever saw the store manager when we were in the store was when he was retreating to his office or socializing with the rescue groups on the weekends and ignoring the customers that the customers that were being tripped by dogs because the rescue groups are always setup right in the entrance.

Well we noticed recently that the fish department started looking a little different from cleaner tanks (not one tank with algae on the glass in the past two months) to not for sale signs on the some of the tanks and thats when we found out they had a new manager. A couple weeks ago they were finally replacing the rusted to pieces plant system when we stopped in with a brand new system.

That one has a decent saltwater section and the one I wrote about earlier that was nasty but is making improvements. The one at 249 and spring cypress is better.

This is where I made my purchase from. As of today they only had an onyx left and to be honest I wasn't too thrilled with the quality of that fish, but I think they were selling him for $35. I was told though that they just sold two picassos and another snowflake other then mine. It seems like every shipment that they get, they seem to get a few premium clowns in.

So as of now they still have a good amount of fish but nothing special just your normal Occ clowns, cardinal, B&W clowns...

Actually the Petco's in spring, both on 249, 1960 and in the Woodlands are all pretty good. We actually have a member of MARSH that works at the woodlands store. We've been keeping an eye on all three and actually made some amazing purchases from them recently. They can be really cheap on the fish/invert side of things.

Also in talking with the guys there, you can order whatever you want and they'll have it in the store ready for you to come get, isolated. They don't have much in the way of coral, nor do any of them have particularly good lighting over their frag tanks. Bearing in mind that each store in spring has maybe 1 person that's a hobbiest and the rest don't know diddly - so you have to catch the right guy.

You have to hit them on the right day though or they get cleaned out. When they get their shipments in mid-week is best. If you wait till Sunday they'll just have a couple tomatoes.

Just wanted to update this thread. The pair of cardinals that I purchased are still doing great. The male is still holding the eggs. The best I can guess is that he has been holding now for at least two weeks and is resting nicely in a breeding net waiting for the little ones to grow up.

The snow flake is settling in nicely as well. I believe the snowflake is a female at this point. After her battle with my other female, she was beat up pretty good, but after I split them up she healed nicely. I was hoping that the snowflake hasn't turned into a female but I guess she did and I will just have to fine a nice male to pair her up with.

The one in League City isn't bad either. They have some decent fish for some really good prices. And they are the same way, they will order whatever you want and you can pick it up when it gets off the truck so they don't even put it in their tank. I got an XL Naso male for $80. I was there when the truck arrived and bought him right out of the box. Also got a school of cardinals for $15 ea. All are doing great.
