I found some "phosphate filters for red algae" in the That Fish Place catalog. They state they will keep phosphate levels down, remove red algae, and hairy algae. Has anyone heard of these? Are they a hoax? :?

They would work (not quickly but slowly reduce your phosphate level) but you have to use a lot of them==> very expensive.

If you have a bad red slime/hair algea bloom you can use Chemi clean or another brand i don't remember the name now (somthing like Red Slime Remover??).. These stuffs work almost overnite, much more effective than the filter. Just need to make not overdosing your tk w/ the Chemi clean or RSR, since they can stress/ kill your corals.

Thanks for the info. I have the red algae in my refugium, and a little speckled throughout my tank. Chem clean wont kill my chorals will it? I had a snail die in my refugium. Can the red slime algae be deadly?

The chemi-clean will not harm your fish or corals. The death of your snail is more than likely due to something else in the tank or just "old age" and not the red algae. Just follow the instructions on the chemi-clean or red slime remover if you use it and you should be ok. Make sure to do the water changes as well. And as Tom would say....get some more flow on the area where the red slime/cyano is and it will go away.
