If I do it. It will probably only be the top layer. But right now I need to stabilize the tank. To much going on with the parameters right now.

I've personally never had long term luck with those plates. Like you, they seem to do great for 18-24 months. After that they slowly die off. I really like them but stopped buying them about a year ago. Wish I had a better answer for you. All my SPS/LPS would be doing great. The plates would decide it's time to go. :(

So it's not just me. That's good to hear.

Idea for a new thread. Things that just don't last in our tanks?

Funny you mention that - I've been thinking for a long time about starting a thread about critter longevity, from the good (14 year clownfish) to the bad (2 months for Crinoid). It could be a useful reference if we got enough people to chime in.

Not a bad idea Frank. It's not too often you find a nice thriving reef tank that has been up and running for over 6-8 years. Seems like most tanks get tore down and rebuilt every few years for one reason or another.

Interesting enough I had a plate that lasted about a year and a half now that I think about it then slowly melted away. Never was inclined to buy another one for whatever reason. Wonder if there's a difference between the short and long tentacle plates? Great idea on the log. It would be helpful for people like that one time I bought a goni....

I had a plate that seemed to do good on my sand bed with Medium flow. The only problem I had was my gold stripped maroon clown kept burying it.
