I lost power this morning for several hours. My main pump (Mag 12) is on a APC UPS 1500 battery backup. After the power came on I noticed that the pump was making a loud humming noise. Could this be from running the pump on the UPS? Can running the pump on the UPS damage the it?

Yep the APC is providing the right power for the Mag 12. Something to do with sine wavs, I cant remember the details, but the end result is only some pumps will work with some APS's. Trial and error is your only hope.

Had it worked, I think you would have been suprised with just how short it would have lasted. A Mag 12 pulls ALOT of juice and would have drained the battery pretty fast.

As an alternative you could plug a powerhead into it to provide water movement. Or heres what I do:

I have a PennPlax battery back up air stone (It plugs in the wall and when the electricity goes out it comes on automatically). I have a powerhead and the airstone plugged into the UPS. WHen the UPS battery runs out the airstone kicks on. This setup will run me for abour 3 days!

I was surprised that the UPS ran the pump and two powerheads for about 45 min. I put a battery powered airstone on the main tank when the UPS gave out.

I have one of those quick chargers for jump starting cars. I added an inverter to it and it will run my Mag9 for 12+ hours and it still showed a half charge.
