I have a single head of frogspawn which has been doing well for about two months. For the past several days I have noticed that the tenticals seem to be thinning out and the top of the head where the mouth is seems to be showing more. There are also things growing out of the skeleton area. There has been one growing out of it since the beginning that I didn't pay much attention to but tonight I noticed there are like six of them now. When I noticed the first one I observed it to be hard and I hoped it a was a new head growing in but now I'm beginning to think they may be causing the frogspawn to die. Maybe some kind of parasite. I took the pictures with a flashlight due to the lights being out. I know the pictures are low quality but I hope they are good enough.

I looked them up and I think you are right. Is that a bad thing and do you think that's what's wrong with the frogspawn. And lastly what should I do?

Though they can be an irritant, highly doubt its them. I would look at water parameters and lighting, they are the usual suspects.

Know your levels for the following parameters?

Calcium
Alkalinity
Magnesium
Nitrate
Phosphate
Salinity

What lights are you running?

I have a bunch that do not seem to bother anything in my tank. They do however thorw a mucus net when there is food in the tank that can irritate some corals. Watch them wheen you feed the tank and see if the mucus nets are on the coral. I would think its unlikely they are effecting the coral but they are easy to break off. I would remove them just to rule them out. I suspect tank parameters or lighting is likely the issue.

This is a great link on tank pests/ good guys.

Water parameters are usually the first thing that affects euphyllias. When they aren't opening, that is one of the first things I look for. If that green on your rocks is cyano, I am guessing you might have a nutrient issue. How big is your tank and how often and what % water changes do you do?

If that is an acan in the first picture, it doesn't look happy either. Again, pointing to a nutrient issue.

I know you are planning on coming by after Christmas, if you think about it, bring a water sample and I will test some things for you and maybe we can figure it out.

With the holidays I have slacked of on testing so I don't know what my parameters are currently but I have been keeping up with water changes at about 10 percent a week. I have not started testing calcium or magnesium yet. I'm buying my test kits a little at a time. As far as lighting goes I have 2 hydra 26.

I have a 90 gallon display but about 125 total water volume. I do about 10 percent a week water change. Yeah that acan is probably not happy the fish keep knocking it off the rock work and I think it probably has been spending more time in the sand than upright. I'm at work now and I'm going out of town as soon as I get home so I can only imagine things will be worse when I get home. But yes I will bring a water sample when I come by your place.

Also. I don't thing the green algea is cyano. It has pretty much been there since the beginning and I recently treated with chemiclean to get rid of red cyano. But yes probably nutrient issues but my nitrates are normally around 5ppm and phosphates are undetectable.

Ok. Sounds good. I have other suggestions too but we have to rule out the simple stuff first.

Acans and frog spawns are tough. My guess is you will be ok. Do a decent water change and change your carbon if you run it when you get back.

The frogspawn got much worse since the last time I posted the pictures but I met with webster and he determined my alk was low. I got my alk back up and the frogspawn seems to be bouncing back.
