What can I do to get rid of a growth of purple sponge that is on a rock. Is there a fish or crab that I can get to eat it or do I just have pick at it by hand?

It's growing on a rock along with purple star polyps and i don't want the sponge to take over.

It's not the type of sponge found at a LFS and looks dense with large holes in it as if an animal made it.

Purple Star Polyps and a purple sponge...What kind of light are you using? Anything that would eat your sponge would like the taste of other corals too. Take a screw driver to it if you have to or sell it.

500w 10k mh and 150w actinic. Would a decorator crab help or do harm?

Harm.

If you dont want it there take the rock out of the water and chip the sponge off. Your polyps will be fine...most the time corals like that are shipped dry.

be sure you get it off when you do. if you expose it to air, the sponge should die off. you wouldn't want dead sponge spiking your nitrogen levels in the tank.

I doubt that one dead sponge would be any concern in a cycled tank.
