So far it has worked for me but learned the hard way you have to have coraline for it to work...

Essenitally purple up is an all in one reef supplement that adds...

calcium'
strontium
magnesium
iodine
carbonates

having these items in a good concentration encourages the growth of coraline

The only think I noticed when I used it was that it lowered alkalinity. Just be careful and monitor your parameters. I have found that coraline grows great with an alk of around 8-9dkh and with tons of water movement. I just went barebottom a month ago and my entire bottom is already encrusted in coraline. Heck....it's even encrusted all 4 walls of my refugium, so lighting doesn't matter.

well youi can spend 7 bucks for a 1/8 of what you can get when yoiu buy mrs wages. find it at krogers.

It is a fairly simple process , add a t spoon or two to a goallon of water shake and let sit over night, ready to use.

now getting it into the tank is another topic. anyone else care to explain?

I have a 3 gallon container that I continuously drip kalk from for my topoff. I mix in 6 teaspoons of Mrs. Wages with 3 gallons of RO/DI and drip at my evaporation rate which is 1 drip every 1.5 seconds. I am able to hold my calcium and alkalinity levels rock solid by doing this. My container is made from a used container of Utz Cheeze Balls from Sams. I then used a threaded 1/2" to 1/4" quick connect fitting to feed the 1/4" rigid tubing. The quick connect is held on the backside with a threaded 1/2" cpvc adapter. I control the flow with an airline valve on the end of the 1/4" rigid tubing. Total cost is about $7. $4 for the cheese balls, $2 for the quick connect, $.65 for the cpvc adapter.

I stopped by home depot and picked up a quick connect and a coupling it was less than 4 dollars. came home cut the top off of an empty milk jug cut a hole near the bottom and screwed in the quick connect, tied a knot in the tubing at a drip rate of 1 drip every 4 seconds and wow, much easier than what I was using before.

You do want an air tight container....otherwise you will end up with a precipitate crust. Just get a different type of container with a lid and you'll be ok.

This may be a silly question but I still consider myself a beginner at this stuff. If you use purple up, do you use it when adding water back to the tank and can it be used with Kalk?

Does any one have a picture of the setup used for topoff? (never seen it before and would like to set one up.) Thanks
