For those of you who have or have had a QT tank, I'm interested in some feedback. I'll soon be transferring the rock and livestock from my 15-gallon nano to my new 80-gallon display and and trying to decide if I want to use the nano as a quarantine tank. It just seems to me that a QT tank may be more trouble than it is worth and may even risk exposing livestock to an environment that is not nearly as healthy as the main display if not maintained properly. I know the risks of not having one, what I'm trying to judge is if it is worth the trouble.

1. Do you have your QT tank up and running at all times or only set it up when you need it?

2. If you only set it up when needed, do you just fill it with water from the display tank or what?

I have had many but it has been years since I actually used one. (octopuses dont go into QT)

I currently cycled my 55 gallon but then decided to upgrade to a 65 gallon, so I will be using the 55 gallon for a QT tank. I plan to only keep it up and running until I have all the fish I plan to add.

If there is a problem then I will pull out the tank and use it doing water changes every 2 or 3 days to control for the possible cycle that can happen when setting up a new tank.

I personally dont have the room or a husband willing to put up with a "set up tank" that isnt being used as an actual fish tank with fishes or octopuses or something. If I wanted to put a perm QT tank my husband wouldnt be happy.

I personally, dont think a perm qt is worth it unless you have REALLY large fish that need a REALLY large tank and to set up and brake down would be worse than to simply maintain.

For a small tank like yours maybe you could keep a damsel of some sort in it to maintain the beneficial bacteria etc when you needed to use a QT tank you can put it in the sump until its ready to go back.

That's a very small tank. You are better off with no quarantine tank.

I have a 40/g with LR and a tunze powerhead running at all times. Other than LR there is no other filteration, I do water changes every couple of weeks. It does take space but fortunately I have a little fish room behind my tank.
