RE: Powder Brown Tang

Kenny at Aquatic Center (W. Airport) was great! He gave me almost full credit for that twin-spot wrasse and traded for a White-Faced Tang a.k.a. Powder Brown Tang. It's a beautiful fish at 4.5" in size. Problem now is she's not taking anything. I tried flakes, nori, lettuce, mysis frozen, frozen brine, but to no avail. She's healthy and just goes crazy picking off the algae on LR and glass. I'm afraid she might not eat anything of substance and emaciate away... HELP?? IDEAS??

reeferham, what was Kenny feeding this tang at his store?? I have only had 1 powder brown tang in my time. The white cheeked is a way better fish to try to acclimate than the other powder brown.

Will the fish eat macro algae?? You might see if you have some in your sump and try the fish on that. The powder brown I had ate everything so that wasn't the problem I encountered.

How long have you had the fish??

SueT,

Thanks for your input. I just got her 4 days ago. I pratically picked her up off Kenny's delivery guy; so I don't think Kenny even tried to feed her. She acclimated fine and is moving freely. I did give her some grape caluerpa and she started nibbling on it, but didn't devour it like my sailfin tang. This is the White-faced Tang(Japonica). I heard from the RC boards that the Japonica species do better in tank life than the white-cheeked. Both are sold under the common name, Powder Brown Tang. How long have you had yours and how big is it? I heard they grow up to 8". How big is your tank? If mine survives, I will probabaly have to get rid of her or get a bigger tank...

Hi Gus, 4 days is not very long at all. Hopefully after the fish settles in, she will start eating for you. I don't have mine any longer due to the fish also outgrowing my older tank. They do get big.

If I'd only had my 180g back then but didn't. I'd love to try one again or a powder blue, but I think the brown would be a better choice.

I would just continue to offer any kind of food you can think of. Surely it will start to eat something soon.

I wouldn't worry about it after just 4 days. I had a yellow tang before, and they readily adapt to captivity, and even then it was about 2 weeks before it would start eating nori from a clip.

Just keep trying different things. My yellow tang didn't care much for the nori from the supermarket, but it just devoured the green Seaweed Selects (and wouldn't even touch the red stuff). Also, try putting the nori under some rocks so it looks so natural instead of on a clip, at least until he gets used to eating it.
