I got a red dendronepthya (carnation coral) today as a gift. I don't normally buy species that I haven't research in advance, but this was a gift. What do you do? I couldn't be rude, could I?

Well I have it now, and I am wondering if there are special needs or concerns. I was only able to get very limited information on it and the information I found was not conclusive. MarineDepotLive says that it is a difficult species to maintain, but then again they also say that about pulsing xenia, and I am hardly able to keep the stuff trimmed down in my tank.

I would appreciate any feedack on this species if anyone has any. I don't really like to keep something I am unfamiliar with.

Thanks,
Trey

Well the limited stuff I have heard/read about them is that they like dark areas of the tank with decent flow. The problem in aquaria is not being able to provide enough phyto etc for the coral to eat/thrive off of. I don't think I have ever seen anyone keep one longer than a few months without it wasting away.

Take it back it is doomed. Do as search in the advanced topic forum on RC no one has gotten close to mastering the captive care of this coral. At least with goniopora one out of 50 lives, I have not heard of any documented sucess with carnations.

If a doctor told you Brandon that you had 3 months to live wouldn't you get a second more informative opinion which would also point you to a place where you could find more information about you ailment? Secondly most people have ignored you so someone needed to answer the question. To get back on topic there are some very interesting threads on reef central where people talk about the antidotal aspects they believe the coral needs but IMO in isn't worth trying for a coral that is just ok. If it is still alive frag it up and bring it to the Frag swap and tell all the newbies that it is an easy to keep soft coral.

Was I that harsh? Wasn't trying to be :bootyshake:...ok I was but for those in Rio Linda, I was being facetious.

it still doesn't make me like you.... haha

Anyways I had a Dendronephyta that I purchased for 5 bucks a few months back. It lived fine for two months and then just started going down hill.

I would treat it like you would a sun polyp. Keep it in the shade and feed it lots of phyto and zooplankton.

I sense a little hostility between Tom and Brandon. Time to kiss and makeup.

Wow!! I didn't know what I was doing when I started this thread. So much anger. Thanks for the replies. I think the frag idea is best, but as a graduate of the TCarlson school of frag swap ethics, I am afraid that would go against my nature. (just pulling someones chain)

Anyhow, I do appreciate the feedback. Now I must go and decide my next step.

Thanks,
Trey

You know Brandon his feelings are easily hurt that is why he has isolated himself from all humanity by living on the outskirts of Bellville.

If you don't want to sell it at a MARSH swap take it to a MAAST or sell it on Ebay as ultra rare red Colt Coral.

I never pegged you as a Rush fan. :D

Well, seeing how it'll likely die no matter who's tank it's in AND it was a gift, I would go ahead and keep it and give it a shot. No reason to hurt the feelings of someone who thought enough about you to buy you a coral.

I didn't know I came off as a bleeding heart liberal?
What's funny is you are the second person in this club to be surprised that I was not a lib.

Tom, I didn't think you were a bleeding heart liberal, but didn't realize you followed a loudmouth buttwipe either. :?

Oh give me a break. Can we just keep some threads on track please?

If you want to discuss politics, Reef Central has a separate forum specifically for that. It's not happening here.
