I have a submersible Quiet One return pump in my sump. The problem is when the power goes out, even for a second, the pump loses suction. I've come home several times to the pump running but no water circulation. Usually after unplugging and plugging back in, it starts pumping again.

Is this normal? Anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

Got a picture? Is it just sitting in water or trying to pull water from somehere?

No pic but

It is sitting in the water. I have a 29 gallon tank for a sump with 3 compartments. The return pump is in the last compartment submerged.

How long has it been in there? Sounds like it may need a good cleaning.

Soak it in half vinegar/half water to remove any calcium deposits.

Let us know how it goes wmatt140. I've heard mixed reviews about the longevity of QuietOne pumps.

Another pump?

Is there another pump you would recommend? This is kind of of a crucial piece of equipment to have questions about.

Thanks,

Mag one

If it is submersible turn it so the return is facing up, as long as it will not suck air or bubbles that way. Then the air in the pump should bubble out & up if the pwr turns off. If you can't face up can you tilt it upwards at an angle to allow air to bubble up?

Interesting

I found these comments in the review section for Quiet One pumps from an online vendor...

"A lot of people say they're unreliable and won't restart after a power failure"

"I have three of these pumps and they all have the same problem - not starting after power failure."

Seems it is not just me.

Uh yea... That sucks. Ditch the quiet one and get a mag... Or a rio even. That is sad. Rios are cheap, but Ive never had a problem with any of mine.... Mags are of noticably better quality though. Hiep was telling me the other day that @ 5ft head his quiet one was spewing water, too weak to return. Also pathetic.

wmatt140: If sound is an issue I would personally go with an eheim or the new maxijet line (>1800). I took my old Mag-7 off and replaced it with a Maxijet-3000 and it is so much quieter.
