Well we have a project in school to make a self sustaining ecodome. We cant use ANY air pumps and alls we have is a 2 liter bottle. And my teacher told me if i can pull off a saltwater one that i could get extra credt. what the other real issue is its gonna be under i wanna say 18 watt bulbs im not sure. Here is my idea that might work.

Small piece of live rock (idealy with hair algae on it) and maybe a peppermint shrimp, or maybe a rock anenmoe (those can live through anything).

Any ideas on plants that would produce enough oxygen that require low amounts of life that could sustain a peppermint shrimp?

Oh I remember these!

Off the top of my head, I cant think of any stagnant saltwater mini ecosystems in nature. You could try some type of easy algae, hair algae like you said, and see how that works out. But as far as keeping any live animals, you would be pretty limited. You could try heading out to the marshes in Galveston and see what small creatures you can find there. Can it have an open top for good air movement? You could even try some of that blade grass stuff they have growing all over the place in the marsh, and put some local pods and ghost shrimp in there.

that blade grass sounds like a good idea, and yea it can have an open top. I have a rock anenome that lived through an entire 2 weeks without any power in my aquarium. (power strip went out when i was at camp:(....) i might try him.
