Has anyone had a sebae anemone? I got one with a fish credit I had at aquarium world. It seems to be doing ok so far but it try's to get under the rock work. And when it does it shrinks up and looks dead. Then I have to dig it out and a few hours later it is back to normal.

When aclimating anything new in my tank, I always cut back (if not off) the supplemental pumps for an hour or two. Many new inhabitants are stressed by the move, and the "calm water" helps them to find their way around / into the tank better. Often times I acclimate late in the day, and leave the pumps off during the first feeding cycle, as well as overnight, bringing them back up during the morning the following day.

Perhaps, if your anemone is trying to crawl under the rock work, there is something it doesn't like in the water column.... Have you checked all of your levels (esp Salinity, Ammonia, and PO4) recently?

The problem is that is sebae is bleached. Sebaes are not natually white. You need to be feeding it often and it will regain its naturaly brownish color. When a Anenome deflates it is removing wastes so don't worry. Let move were it wants to and make sure it will eat.

I also bought a seabae from Aquarium World and had the same problem. I made the mistake of not researching before my purchase. Your seabae should not be white!! It should be a brown color when healthy. Mine was bleached, would not eat and would constantly move under the rock. It turned its self inside out and never recovered. I tossed it out before it nuked my tank with an ammonia spike. The Seabae is one of the most difficult speices of annenome to keep. guess i learned this the hard way.

I bought my Seabea ane. Jan. last year when i started my 180gal sys. It was one of my very first corals in the new tank. It has grown a lot and the color stays pretty much the same :? And it stays in the same location (below a big rock) for most of the time.. It does gain a little brwwn tint on some tenacles, but I thought that's b/c the artificial lighting/ water conditions as compared to their natural environment - just as it happens to sps and some lps corals.. didn't know about the bleaching thing.
But I'm sure my seabea is very healthy since it grows fast, extends well (which worry me), and can eat a whole salad shrimp in a blink.

Here are some pics:

Thanks for the info. I will try to feed it more often and see if that helps. I just checked all my levels and every thing seems to be ok. I will have to watch it to make sure it does not spike my tank.

WOW

I see them offered from time to time in LFS. Do they not do well in home aquaria? I thought they were supposed to be relatively hardy if you give them lots of room, occasional feedings, and good flow. Is that another aquarium myth?

I heard that they live in very cold water. So you may need a good chiller to keep them happy in the summer time.
In fact, it did well for a little more than 2 wks from the time I bought it. Then I went on for a week long vacation, and it just disappeared when I came back.. so not sure what went on when i was away.. One thing i don't about it is that it moved around alot. One time I saw it jsut eject itself and let itself floating (or swimming) in the middle of water column and settle to a new location.. it was cool to see that.

I think I read somewhere that they live in sub-tropical water and need cold water part of the year and tropical temps the rest.

Has your tube anemone eaten your purple tang yet? :) Not trying to be a smartmouth - they are very predatory anemones and have a way of eating careless fish after lights out.

Cheers
