Do you skim, and if so how do you keep your skimmer quiet?

I'm thinking about using my red sea prizm deluxe on my 17 gallon nano. but its loud.

My prizm made lots of noise, I never could figure out how to make it quieter...

Good luck, if you do succeed, post it here cause a lot of folks would like to know....

Not only does it make it quieter, it also prevents the dreaded overflow...must do

Yeah, thats done. the main noise I'm getting is pump/venturi related. I think I have a solution , but it will have to wait until Tuesday. Hint: sand.

Here are my results.

The main noise I get is from impeller cavitation. This sound is amplified because of the hollow V shaped volume the the input tube goes through (just above the pump/impeller)

First thing I tried was to pack this with foam, that seemed to reduce the sound well.

Thinking that sand would do a better job muffling the vibration, i pulled out the foam and added dry sand to the V. It _might_ be better than the foam, but not much better.

In the end I settled on dry sand at the bottom, and foam on top

Now the major source of sound is from the air input tube. it's resonating in the collection cup. I think I can quiet this down by adding an inline filter to the line before the collection cup.

Anyhow it is quieter now, FWIW

Or try a length of silicone airline tubing ? I'm not real familiar with the Prizm, but I know that a longer length of silicone tubing on the venturi intake certainly makes my BakPaks quieter.

prizms are garbage, get a good skimmer like an Aqua C or a BakPak you will not regret it.

This is on a 17 gallon tank. This skimmer is perfectly fine for the volume and stocking I intend.

For a nano tanks they work just fine. They are a lot cheaper, and take up less room than a bakpak or an aqua c. For larger tanks I agree with you though.

for a HOB skimmer, I prefer the sea clone. They are big, but that work great, oh, you can also use them on large tanks too.
