Does the skimmer take a while to start making foam every time you clean the collection cup or did I just put it back together wrong?

Make sure your getting lots of micro bubbles in the reaction chamber. If not then you may have to clean/readjust your pump.

I assume you're talking about the CPR bakpak.

Yes the bakpak :) there are a huge amount of micro bubbles in the reaction chamber but in the throat of the collection cup it appears they are collecting into larger size bubbles and moving so violently that they just burst before they can collect into a real foam.

Sounds like it needs to be adjusted. As it gets the excess waste under control it will need to be adjusted again.

the only adjustment it has on it that I have found is an air valve. I currently have that set almost completely open, do you think I should close it and cut back on the bubble some?

If it is a bac pac, can't you adjust the cup? If so move it down some. If not then see if you can slow the flow down. As far as skimmers are concerned you want slower flow and more bubbles.

I have played around with moving the cup up and down didn't seem to make a lot of different I will try to find a flow adjustment this evening -- thanks

I think what you are taking about is common. As long as you have micro bubbles in the reaction chamber you should be good to go. The collection cup adjustment allows you adjust wet or dryer foam.

Just let the skimmer break in. My new Remora Pro did the same thing.

You will get larger bubbles once they get pushed up the tube to the collection cup. That is normal.

I have a CPR bak pak and it did the same thing. Part of it was letting it adjust in, the other part was finding the exact height for the collection cup. Moving the little rubber gasket up and down and letting it skim for a couple of hours will eventually find the right setup for your tank. It was a pain in the butt, but once I found a sweet spot, I didn't have to move it at all (until I pushed the collection cup down too hard one day! DOH!)

thanks guys, I think I have too many disolved solids as I have a sudden outbreak -- since it's brown I thought it was diatom but when I tried to remove it in was in what looked like lil rubber mats so TREY says it is likely cryno :) eventually I will get this 'right', right? Does the skimmer go thru a new breakin period each time you clean the cup and if so then I expect it would be better to let it get at least 1/2 full before cleaning it again.

Mine did seem to take a little while to skim great again, took a day or two for a "film" to develop on the collection cup neck, then the real skimming began. So I usually let it skim for 3 to 5 days before cleaning it, when I was REAL lazy I wouldn't clean the collection cup neck and it would skim better sooner.

hope that helps.

I have the same problem if my skimmer is "too clean". It will take up to a day to get skimming where I like it again. I try to just give it a good rinse in my old water when I do a water change. Knock all the big stuff off and then it's good to go. Seems to get back to skimming better a lot faster that way.

Everyone always says

You can move the cup higher or lower to produce wetter or dryer skim

But no one ever says why you would want to or which is better

Also does the cap on the collection cup do anything inportant? Mine seems to produce more skim with the cap off.

From what I've heard it is better to be a little bit above dry skim. Really dry skimming doesn't pull enough DOCs out of the water, and skimming that is too wet is really just wasting water.

The cap, for me anyway, was there to reduce the smell off the skimmate and to protect my wall, I did have the cap off for a little while(it did seem to skim slightly better with it off) but it was about 4" from the wall and it started splattering skimmate on the wall, so the cap went back on.

The cap on the top serves to pop the bubbles that come up from the column so what collects in the cup is more liquid in nature.

Wet or dry skimmate is a preference. I don't like mine too wet because it takes too much water out of the system, but I don't like to have to chisel it from the cup either. Try to find a happy medium.

I hope this helps.
