I'm looking to buy a small skimmer (nano reef size). I've done lots of research on various models, but I wanted to know what everyone here thought.

What do you use in you 20gal & less tank.

Maybe you don't even use a skimmer. If not - what's your routine?

Just to provide some discussion, when I had a series of nano tanks under 30g without an ATO I constantly battled salinity fluctuations. Used a variety of skimmers that never quite got dialed in compared to a full size skimmer on a larger tank. Thus, most of the time they skimmed extremely wet further complicating the salinity issues which in turn complicated my water parameters. As I learned more I became diligent with trying to keep parameters stable which resulted in weekly water changes and perfectly matching conditions. Now that I reflect, I could have increased the tank stability by performing smaller water changes at least 2x weekly which is what I would suggest. Nutrient export never seemed as big of a deal as its difficult to have a large bio load due to the small tank size. Really my focus was the corals FWIW. I would save the money unless you can run a sump of some kind for a small fullsize skimmer. But in the end if you decide to upgrade none of the equipment can be carried over further reinforcing my suggestion of a focused husbandry/WC routine.

I agree with jqsquared.
I have the IM Ghost Skimmer on my 25g lagoon and it's pretty craptastic.
It skims, but it's pretty wet. I doubt it's doing much in the way of DOC removal.
You really can't beat a good sized weekly water change with a tank this size. It's too easy.

That said, one of the larger HOB skimmers from Tunze or Aquamaxx would probably work a little better.

I also used an IM Ghost skimmer on a small 10 gal. nano I had. Never again. It was a worthless skimmer. It was noisy and didn't produce skimmate at all. Just very wet, yellow water. I had better luck with water changes.

Based on popular opinion - we decided to go skimmer-less this time around. I'll do weekly water changes & see how that holds up.

This will be an SPS only setup.

Auto top off & dosing is already incorporated into the design.
