Biggest thing to first check is the manufacturers recommended water level height.

I would solely base some of my options based on my sump water level height.

I ran a reef octopus 120ss and constantly had to try and find the right height using Tupperware or a stand but could never get it exact.

Ended up switching to the Nyos Quantum since their recommended height was exactly what my level was at. Less than one week I had black gunk getting pulled out.

Reduce airflow until it looks like more water than bubbles. Adjust water output and or pump speed until line of mostly water to mostly bubbles is a few inches down in cup. Wait a few minutes and check water level adjusting if needed. Wait an hour and adjust water level if needed. Leave i be for a few days or until you see skimmate.

Skimmate too thick, increase pump speed or reduce water output to raise water/bubble line.

Cup filling with bubbles that are not popping, increase air and watch bubble/water line to adjust back to where it was if needed.
