My name is Daryl. How is everyone? I am a new member, although I have been lurking about for about a year now. So how about a little history. I started a 10 gallon freshwater tank and shortly realized that such a small tank needed constant attention. So I went out and found me a used 45 gallon. I have been running the 45 gallon for about 6 months now and have become more comfortable with the idea of having a fish tank. My wife is constantly like “I want that fish” and I have to respond with “That is a saltwater fish”. So I finally got the go ahead to build a saltwater tank. I will be doing what so many others have done, but here it goes anyways.
40 gallon breeder (display) (already have)
20 gallon long (sump) (already have)
Bean animal overflow
SWC 120 (protein skimmer)
Mag drive 9.5 (return pump)
Custom stand and canopy
DIY LED fixture (24 rb, 24 cw, 4-8 moon) (2x 8.5” X 12” heatsinks)
VorTech MP10 ES (power head)
40 lbs. of dry sand (Aragonite Special Grade Reef Sand) (already have)
60 lbs. of rock (dry and live mixed 50/50)
150W Jager heater (already have)
Buckeye Field Supply 100gpd RO/DI (already have)
Reefkeeper Lite with ALC module
I will make this my build thread. Just so everyone knows up front. I work long hours and don’t have a lot of spare time, so this will be slow. Since I don’t have a lot of spare time (or necessary tools), I need to find someone to build me a stand. I have something already laid out but I am at work currently and it won't let me upload the pictures. I will have to do that later. If someone would please help me with this, I would appreciate it. BTW, the stand is 3’ x 2’ x 5’-7.
Here are a couple of questions I still have.
1) If I don’t want to do an adruino build for the LED’s could I just use a Reefkeeper Lite with ALC module? Drivers will be PWM. I am thinking of going this route to keep everything simplified, since I will use other features of the RKL (ATO, temp, etc.).
2) How much substrate to use in display if I will be getting sifters, I am also using eggcrate on the bottom to help secure the rock?
3) Where is a good place to buy dry/live rock? (experiences)
4) What type of substrate to use in sump for a deep sand bed?
5) What are the benefits of chateo over mangrove or vice versa?
6) Where did you get the glass cut for your sump/overflow?
7) How does this sound for bean animal overflow? 1” stand pipes down to sump. For return, ¾” from pump split off between fuge and display. Display will be ¾” to tee reduced to (2) ½” lines to ½” bulkheads and then to ½” locline in tank.
Sorry for the lengthy start, just excited.
