just got a humongous snail from fishland but dont know what it's called. It's about 4 inches with black footed. He's glass surfing most of the time just like any other snail. Wonder if he's reef safe or carnivorve. Might be a threat to other snail?

Uhhh?? If you didn't know what it was or what it ate, why did you buy it??

And could you put up a picture of it? Shell pattern, shell shape?

Isis - he want us all to know that he is a risktaker, not worrywart about the small details.

hmm... also the fact that it is large could be troublesome. is it perhaps some kind of cowrie or conch? i'm assuming that the shell is not spiral shaped, right? any color to it? does the snail extend any mantle over the shell? you'd have to be more descriptive if you're asking for an ID.

If you think a turbo snail is good at knocking over frags and rocks...I'd hate to see what that thing could do to your aquascaping.

And i assume you never bought anything on impulse?

Heck no!! Are you kidding me?? Impulse buys can be a death sentence to a marine tank, especially if the critter bought isn't reseached FIRST. Sorry to sound so harsh, but situations like this disappoint me. You, along with other hobbyists, go out and buy an animal they aren't sure they can care for, and then next thing you know it is dead, or has managed to kill something else in your tank. You might as well buy a bunch of corals and stick a wild angel in there just because it looks pretty. Then when you come home to see the angel has made a lunch of your corals, you can't get upset because impulse buys are okay. Heck, you don't even know what it eats?? It could be a predator, like cone snails, where it will eventually eat your fish or snails. Or if it starves, will it contaminate your tank like some cucumbers are know to do?? There are too many "what ifs" that should have stopped you from buying this. You have to remember, that in this hobby, many people mix species from different oceans. One animal that may fair well in the pacific and in your tank may meets its demise when an animal from the atlantic or carribean is introduced. You have to keep in mind that these animals have evolved without contact to other animlas from other oceans, so when they encounter something new, sometimes bad things happen. You have just put your tank and the new animal's lives at stake because you didn't know what you bought. The same rule applies to just putting things from the coast that you have no clue will survive into your tank.

I bought plenty of stuff on impulse in Chicago for my old reef tank, but I at least knew it was a leather coral or mushroom coral or asked a knowledge fish store guy before purchase. Introducing an unknown into an aquarium is a recipe for bad news.

Basically what Kim said. Know BEFORE you buy.

Too bad some fish store people will sell anything to newbies, I once overheard a fish store guy selling an baby oscar to a person with a 10 gallon tank!

and just to be clear yao, I wasn't calling you a newbie, I know you've been around for a while :) I was just commenting on the LFS people in general.

Yoa sounds like you need to start shopping with Kim so you don't make buys that won't do with your tank.

But it is done now, so if you could explain the shape and color pattern and any other thing descriptive of this snail, so we can get busy with dealling with this situation and not fight over what should have been done.

Where did you get it from?? Did the person who sold it to you was someone who knows anything about SW?? If they said it was okay, then they must have known something about it and its habits, why didn't you ask them what it ate?? Did you not even ask what it was?? Like what kind of snail it was?? What questions did you ask?? I am just baffled that you didn't get any of this info before purchase.

Its probably a cowry snail. Had one, they move stuff around though. Not good for my reef tank.
