My RO unit is producing more ro water than waste water, which I'm pretty sure should never happen. Anyone got any ideas as to why this would be happening?

That is strange (economical) but strange. Silly question, have you tested for TDS yet and if so what is the reading? would seem like you are by-passing, plugged restrictor or something like that.

Don't know what would cause it but I doubt in either case that is water you will want to use. Go visit someone with a TDS meter before you add that to a tank.

RO

Are we talking just RO water or the both processes together. Ro/DI, because when I' m just getting RO water for drinking water I turn the valve on for just RO water and it comes out faster than the RO/DI water for my tank. And the pressure changes on my gage. Your obviously skipping a process if just getting the RO side. So the flow is faster.

Lambianz: I had understood that the RO step was the rate-limiting part of the process.

boudster, jlord1: I don't believe your RO-DI should ever produce more purewater than wastewater. Perhaps there is a puncture in the RO membrane. As reefvoyeur mentioned, you should definately test TDS.

boudster, i talked to kent marine & was told my ro membrane was probably loose, i unscrewed it, pulled it out, then pushed in as far as it would go. that fixed it for me, might be worth a try for you.

does a new RO membrane have to sit in water for a few hours before it starts working correctly?

I would get a TDS meter and check your water. They are pretty cheep

It sounds like there is a problem with your RO membrane or your flow restrictor. Do you have an adjustable or fixed flow restrictor? I think you should be getting 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 waste to good water out of your unit.

RO/DI

IF YOUR RATE LIMIT CHANGES SO DOES THE THE PRESSURE ON THE GAGE

NOW THE BALL IS BACK IN YOUR CORT!! TheH

I make replies on my experience. And sure know what happens to any liquid when the pressure is high or low. Meaning less or more flow, whether clogged line is the problem or a leak, which certainly wouldn't show a high pressure reading.

Hook Um Horns!!!!!!!!!

The flow restrictor is fixed......I should probably install an adjustable one. I will check out the Membrane first to see if there is anything wrong with it....although I really don't know what to look for.

"Too much permeate" is typically caused by:

1. No RO membrane installed
2. RO membrane installed, but not fully seated (this is what jlord found)
3. an internal crack in the RO membrane housing.

You should have a waste:permeate ratio of about 4:1

I went ahead and purchased a 75GPD Membrane (The previous one was 35GPD). I also did as suggested on your website and bought an adjustable flow restrictor so I could manually set my waste:permeate ratio. Everything seems to be working well now. Thanks!
