Going to surf side beach this coming weekend. Looking for pointers on collecting? Any hot spots? Really want some peppermint shrimp. Any tips appreciated, best times, places etc.

Can’t help you much with location but I am an avid diver and grab shrimp just to play with for a few minutes. The trick is to always cover the back end of a shrimp because they use their tails to rocket backward. Put a fine mesh net behind the shrimp and move your hand towards him from the front slowly. If he backs up into the net, great, if he crawls onto your hand then just put the net over your hand. A snorkel/ diving mask is a must to collect them so you can see what you’re doing and a snorkel is also very helpful so you can take your time. If you’re interested in collecting fish then wade out into waist deep water and scan the very surface of the water. Get as close as you can and do not hesitate at all, swipe the net across the surface of the water very quickly and have a waterbottle with a lid full of seawater ready to be used as a collection container. I have caught chain pipefish, silversides, needlefish, dog face puffer babies, pilot fish, baby snappers, and a whole bunch of other tiny fish like this (Panama City Beach in Florida). You can also watch the sand bottom for hermit crabs then use the net to scoop them up. Scored some sweet Florida white legged hermit crabs that way. Pics of the pipefish and hermits :)

Never collected over at Surfside we always collected peppermint shrimp and other small fish off the jetties but you have to do it at night time and very little wind. There is a huge thread on collecting somewhere in the general discussion threads.

@Reefahholic Any ideas for surfsisde?

Yes, on the 3/4 mile jetty there’s a nice area on the park side that forms a small little cove or corner. It’s shallow enough to wade too. There’s a road that ends on a sandy beach or you can access the jetty’s from the park. There’s also the Quintana side of the jetty too.

Those palms are inside the park. You can park there and there’s restrooms. If you look closely, you can see a boardwalk that goes down to the beach. There’s also a road more to the left of that. It will take you almost to the sand. You can park off on the side. I’ve surfed this place at least 100x.

If I could pick a place to fish on the upper Texas coast it would be that jetty. It’s loaded with fish. So you know there’s bait fish and everything else in there too.

The problem with most Jetty's is that they are hard to walk. This is why I like the Jetty across from Academy because the rocks are flat near the water and can be easily walked on. The others aren’t like that.

The advantage to Surfside is that the water is a lot more green 50% of the time. This is coming from somebody that has surfed it for about 30 years.
