If you had a chance to change your lighting, would you go for MH instead?

I started with metal halides, but we had issues with it heating up the room too much.

he has already gone that route as well as several others :)

OK, I have to set the record straight, because it's not as bad as you guys make it sound - I started with the metal halides and had to get rid of them like I said. Since I already had 2 VHO actinics, the cheapest and easiest route seemed to be to add 2 more VHO's. That didn't give me enough light, so I went with the T5's.

Oh, and I did have PC's on my first tank, 2 years ago. So I guess I have tried every kind of lighting out there.

OK, thanks. Im setting up a 20G sps tank and debating btwn 250W MH or 4x24 t5.

If you are focusing on SPS, then I would go with the metal halides. With T5 you can keep most SPS species, and some of them will even hold their color well, but the growth rates won't be very high.

If you put the halide high enough off the tank you lessen your chance of heat issues tremendously. There are people who do 400 watt metal halides over 29 gallons etc. Most of them seem to have the halide 12 inches or more from the surface of the water. Adding a fan or two to move air over the tank and sump if you have one will also help.

Yeah, I never really had too much of a problem with the water temperature - probably because my tank had an open top with pendants hung about 16" above the water, so there was lots of airflow around the lights and no heat buildup. And that was my problem - the airflow kept the tank nice and cool, but the heat had to go somewhere, and that was the rest of the room.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - our problem was unique and caused by the POS air conditioner that came with the house. As far as the tank goes, I had more of a water temperature issue when I switched to VHO's in a closed canopy than I did with metal halide pendants.

Well my MH would be in an open back canopy with probably 2 fans, 4 if i can fit them. My house stays around 79-80 so thats why im afraid it might heat up.
