Originally I was going to go with a starboard bottom. I ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons. First I didnt have room in my sump for a refugium nor did I have room for a remote DSB. Also try as I may, I couldnt get over the benefits of a sand bed. Plus my husband couldnt be convinced that the starboard would be nice lol. There is also the fact that I will hardly be able to get my hand all the way at the bottom of the tank, so being able to suck out loose food and poo manually isnt very likely. The tank is 24 inches high plus the canopy. It would have been a mess.

There were a few other reasons but I cant remember at the moment.

Just need to be careful not to stir the sandband if its over 3" deep. I am thinking about adding a remote deep sand bed, that I can throw out every couple of years. Think I am going to go with a normal salt bucket sealed with about 2-3 inches of room at the top but the rest filled. Still researching the benefits and cons.

Oh yes, I am making sure I dont have any critters that will burrow or stir the sand. Also, I will simply try and vacuum the top and not go lower into the sand bed. That would equal death for my sps if I released all the stuff in the sand.

I would have liked to put a rdsb on this tank. I actually looked into it for a while but I just didnt have room. This fish tank is 48 inches plus then I have a cabinet that goes next to it thats 24 inches. This takes up all the space along that wall. Then the wall curves into what was the formal dinning but has now been turned into pantry/storage. Thats where my water changing system is located. It is made up of 3, 30 gallon + trash cans plus a long water hose for draining old water etc etc.

I wish we had basements in Texas. Would make equipment placement much easier.
