I watched a video on youtube this weekend where Mike Paletta put together a 75 gallon reef to test out led lighting. At the end of it (three episodes) Sanjay came and they discussed each of their experiences with coral under led lighting.

What I noticed is that it seemed that the water level in Mike's tanks (there was a couple you could see during the interviews) was kept a couple inches below the trim on his tanks. I personally make sure to set my water level where the trim covers the water line.

Is there a reason he kept the water so low in his tanks? Am I maybe keeping my water too high?

I really wanted to go to this guys house (whever he is and wherever he lives) and "fill" his tanks up....i guess im OCD about it. LOL!

Nah I think its a personal thing mostly - maybe has to do with how high his overflows are... Would you mind posting the link to the video's?

I've also seen people use lower water levels if they have surge devices or use powerheads on a standing wave type mode.

i bet you are correct.

He had this awesome overflow/surge thing that he was using. It was an "aqua X". I googled it, but couldnt find one for sale...or much info on them.

Here you go Steve....How to set up a saltwater aquarium - Mike Paletta Starting a Reef Tank - LED Experiment - Part I - YouTube

his results were interesting. If you jump straight to episode 3 for the results and conversation with Sanjay, that is probably the most interesting part.

I always thought those where kinda cool. I don't think they made a big splash in the US not sure why. IRC someone on MARSH installed one but don't have a clue as to who it was.
