Hello all,

I'm still planning my reef tank and I have limited space to put the tank, I have 49" between baseboards and walls, which eliminates a lot of the 48" tanks because the stand and canopy will be wider than 49". Or I might need to build my own canopy and stand that are not wider than 49". I'm looking for a tank between 55-120 gallons.

I already checked AGA and Oceanic and most of their tanks are 36" and then a jump to 48". Does anyone know of another manufacturer that does 36" to 47" long tanks? Or does anyone have a tank lying around that has that dimension? I might have to go the custom tank route, but not sure I want to do that.

The Oceanic stands are only 48.5" wide.

Anything in between 36" and 48" is going to be custom, and probably a lot of $$$.

And if you have to go custom, make sure you also get a price from the guy you should meet Wenesday night at my house, for I found that glass custom cost as much as one out of Acrylic most of the time.

question about where you going to put it, if you put it there, are you limiting your accessiblity to it? For mantaince purposes.

Nathan,

Yeah I've already asked for a quote from the guy I'm meeting at your house tomorrow(any reason we are being vague? :) Anyway, it is more than I was expecting to spend.

I know that my accessibility for maintenance is going to be REALLY limited in the place we are putting the tank,I won't be able to get to the back of the tank. Unfortunately it is the best spot in the house for a variety of reasons I won't go into. To deal with this I'm going to make sure that the hood and stand I use are able to be as flexible as possible. Probably will be DIY projects, not the best situation, but the best compromise.

How many frags do I get for guessing "the guy's" name right?

Hey Brian,

You sure you can't put that tank anywhere else in the house? I mean, do you really need your living room furniture or dining room table and chairs? Come on, man........priorities!! :D

A woman with priorities, Karen do you think you can talk to my wife about good priorities?

I would LOVE to put the tank in the dining room, how many people ACTUALLY use their dining room more than 2-3 times a year. However, that is an eastward facing room and the sun would beat on the tank for half the day. I would have a huge algae and heat problem :( Same goes for most of the living room and kitchen. I don't feel comfortable putting a fish tank upstairs(too much weight) and I don't want the noise or lights in my bedroom, so that only leaves one place really for the tank.

The basic problem is I bought the wrong kind of house for a fish tank larger than 30-40 gallons. Next time I get a house I'm going to CAREFULLY examine the house so I have a location for a fish tank. Preferrably in the wall with a fish room behind it :)

Our tank is in a south facing room, and it gets light all day, especially in the fall and winter. I have blinds on the windows to block out the light

Yeah, I considered blinds too, but the wife and I both like the open and bright look to our house, don't want it darker. I guess I'm just too picky :)

I've always felt that way, too. I'd much rather have the light streaming in all day. But my office is in the front of the house where I spend most of my time during the day, and I have an east facing window. I also go outside a lot

garagebrian,
I got a few of my tanks from Andy at FISHALND...all custom. I got a 120/g and a 46/g (22" cube) with cusom canopy for MH & stand. His prices are reasonable and the quality of the wood work is awesome.

Uh guys and ladies, got a question about this lighting up the room stuff, if you put a nice MH lit tank in the room, do you really think it will be dark in that room? Not in my living room and I only run a 150W MH.

Brian, I feel the same way about the next house we buy, if there will be a next house. Kinda hoping we don't have another house.

As far as being obscure about saying you should talk to Kevin, well I didn't want people to think that is the only person I suggest when it comes to tanks.
