My wife and I took a trip to Cancun this weekend. Friday was our first day there, and late in the afternoon we made our way out to the beach. The water was sooooo blue and the waves were huge, so I had to get out in the water. I was just kind of playing in the waves...trying to get out there a little ways and then ride the waves back to shore. I was having a great time, then all of a sudden I realized my feet couldn't touch the bottom anymore, so I thought I better let the waves carry me in a bit. I looked back to the shore and was surprised at how far out I was. So a few big waves came my way and I tried to ride them in, but I couldn't seem to get any closer. After several attempts, I started to panic a bit. I was getting pretty tired, and couldn't seem to make any progress. I tried waving and calling for help, but no one seemed to notice. Looking towards the shore I saw my wife walking down the beach looking for me. I frantically waved to here and called for help (she couldn't hear me over the sound of the ocean). At first when she saw me wave she got scared and thought I might be in trouble, but then she said it looked like I was "having fun", and that I must have just been waving at her. At this point I started thinking that I might actually die out there. It was a pretty scary thought....not because I'm afraid for my own life, but the thought of leaving my wife and 3 kids behind was terrifying. I continued to struggle, and finally a huge wave crashed into me and sent me hurling under the water towards the shore. It didn't quite get me as far as I hoped though, so I wasn't out of danger yet. Looking back at the shore I saw a lifeguard approaching the water and a group of people gathering....right then another big wave crashed into me and send me flying towards land. I could now touch the bottom and proceed to stumble in to shore. Fortunately the lifegaurd didn't have to come rescue me....needless to say I was very shaken as was my wife. For the next hour or so I was basically in a state of shock, and salt water kept coming out of my mouth and nose. I definitely gained a new respect for the Ocean and its power. I didn't go anywhere near the water the next day, but yesterday I did get back in the water....but was much more careful. Anyway, it was a great vacation, and I'm happy to be alive! Here are some pics I took:

wow, that is scary. do you think it was a rip current???

the pics are beautiful though.

Not sure what it was...I'm not very familiar with the Ocean as I lived in Utah my whole life until I moved here 7 years ago...and I don't bother going into the water at Galveston.

That was the biggest problem....my inexperience with the ocean. I didn't realize its power. It was stupid for me to be swimming alone, and what's even worse, there were red flags posted to warn people not to go swimming because of the size of the waves....I didn't realize that until after

Jim, I know that you have probably heard this but, when you are in a situation like that you need to just stay calm and swim parallel to the shore. Either you got caught in a rip or, judging by the size of that shore break, the waves were just sucking out. Think of a wave as a big rolling ball heading towards the shore, if you get caught under the ball, you're going to get sucked out. Just my 2 cents.

"When the wave breaks here, don't be there or else you're gonna get drilled"

I can personally attest to a experience close but not as scary as yours. My husband and I lived in Veracruz when we first got married. He has pulled me out of several close encounters of the watery kind for sure.
He's been a lifeguard as well as a girlfriend of mine and on 2 occasions pulled people back to shore with nothing but an inflatable children's ring.
It was a very isolated beach, no lifeguards.
The real stupid thing of this was that both times the folks were drunk out of their minds. The 2nd time. 1st drunk goes out, gets in trouble and his 2 drunk friends go to save him. Ended up pulling all 3 of them in to shore. Luckily they had taken a rope out with them.
I was scared for my husband and girlfriend risking their lives for drunks!
Rip tides are very, very dangerous.
The sad part is thinking about dying so close to so many people that are having fun and that you can see so close.......Yet so far......
 I have been walking in knee deep water, step in a hole way over my head. Then there are the waves.
Healthy respect. 8O

Goby1kanobi,
I now share your healthy respect for the ocean.
At least I can say I wasn't drunk....I don't drink.

dvs...thanks for the tip about swimming parallel to the shore....I have never heard that before. Like I said, I'm very inexperienced when it comes to the ocean.

That's one way to learn a hard lesson. I grew up going to the ocean every summer with my family in NC. Those waves in Cancun look awfully similar in size (though I like cancun's color better). Those are not the kind of waves to fool around with if your not familiar. The advice is correct though; swim parallel to shore and don't panic. I know it's tough in unfamiliar circumstances, but not panicing is important in just about any situation.

Jim,

Glad you are still with us! Scary! I have been to Cancun and my wife and I tried playing in the waves and they just battered us around, even in shallow water. We decided to just watch from shore after getting the snot kicked out of us in 1-2 foot deep water.

That's why I slap my tank every now and then when Iwalk by, so she doesn't forget who's in charge. 8)

Glad to hear you're OK!

I hear this same thing from a lot of people that visit Cancun. They are always surprised by the surf there. I personally favor Playa Del Carmen over cancun since the surf is typically much calmer and I have even been to one resort with a reef in front of it to protect the beach. (also provided great snorkeling) Glad to hear you are ok jim, and glad to hear you enjoyed the rest of your trip. The riviera maya is one of my favorite places to visit.
